Gender Integration in Eastern African Farmers Federation Strategies: Position Paper

The successful integration of a gender and youth perspective in an organisation's work requires an explicit recognition in its overarchning documents. Based on a desk review and analysis of two EAFF strategies through a gender lens, the paper examines the aim and extent of gender and youth integration in EAFF and proposes recommendations to strengthen gender and youth integration in strategies and programmes to enhance the achievement of the organisational goal for the Eastern Africa region.

With the completion of the Project Implementation Plan in October 2022, work setting up the first two-year cycle of GROWING Future Clubs (GFCs) among households with young children in 36 communities began in earnest, focusing first on ensuring agricultural interventions occurred in a timely manner, then nutrition trainings, and getting gender champions in place to initiate gender dialogues at district and local levels. Much is being learned that will inform and improve the integrated intervention by the start of Cycle 2 in December 2023.

Such transformations need to be tailored and sensitive to the vulnerabilities and needs of marginalized communities yet are hindered by knowledge gaps. In particular, the food and nutrition security needs of the most vulnerable are often poorly understood, as are the policy frameworks and resource requirements associated with meeting their needs.

Priority science can accelerate agroforestry as a natural climate solution

The expansion of agroforestry could provide substantial climate change mitigation (up to 0.31 Pg C yr−1), comparable to other prominent natural climate solutions such as reforestation. Yet, climate-focused agroforestry efforts grapple with ambiguity about which agroforestry actions provide mitigation, uncertainty about the magnitude of that mitigation and inability to reliably track progress.
