Illuminating Hidden Harvests – The contributions of small-scale fisheries to sustainable development

december, 2022
Italy

Small-scale fisheries account for at least 40 percent of the global catch from capture fisheries and provide employment across the value chain for an estimated 60.2 million people, about 90 percent of the total number employed in fisheries globally. The economic value of these fisheries, however, is only a part of their importance: for example, nearly 53 million additional people were estimated to be engaged in subsistence activities in 2016.

Global progress on adaptation implementation

december, 2022
Global

The UNEP Adaptation Gap Report (AGR) series provides an annual science-based assessment of the global progress on adaptation planning, financing, and implementation. It also explores options for enhancing and advancing national and global adaptation efforts and provides an in-depth analysis of selected issues of interest. In addition to the update on adaptation planning and implementation, the 2023 edition provides a more in-depth finance assessment chapter and includes a thematic deep-dive chapter on loss and damage. The report also highlights key case studies.

Conservation agriculture has no significant impact on sheep digestive parasitism

december, 2022
Global

Conservation agriculture (CONS A) is a sustainable agriculture system based on crop rotation with no tillage. It has various environmental advantages compared to conventional agriculture (CONV A): decreased water evaporation, erosion, and CO2 emissions. In this first study of its kind, we aim to evaluate the impact of this type of agriculture on sheep gastrointestinal parasites. Two lamb groups aged between 5 and 10 months were randomly included to graze separately on CONS A and CONV A pastures.

Living-lab for people in the Colombian Amazon: a pact for a sustainable territory

december, 2022
Global

A living-lab for people (LL4P) has been conceptualized as an inclusive and diverse space to design, test, demonstrate and advance sociotechnical innovations and associated modes of governance. While initially proposed within the innovation and communication technologies (ICT), living-labs (LL) have broadened their scope to sectors such as health, cities, public sector, education, and rural development, and now are seen as methodologies or arenas for innovation in which users or citizens play a central and active role.

A review of gender inequality and women’s empowerment in aquaculture using the reach-benefit-empower-transform framework approach: A case study of Nigeria

december, 2022
Nigeria

Along the aquaculture value chain, what is the status of gender equality and women’s empowerment with a particular emphasis on aquaculture? What can be done to bring about gender equality and women’s empowerment in the aquaculture sector? This article explores these questions through a systematic review of the extant literature on gender and aquaculture using Nigeria as a case study. A total of 78 articles are analyzed based on the reach-benefit-empower-transform framework. The findings show that there is gender inequality within the aquaculture value chain.

Aquaculture governance: five engagement arenas for sustainability transformation

december, 2022
Global

A greater focus on governance is needed to facilitate effective and substantive progress toward sustainability transformations in the aquaculture sector. Concerted governance efforts can help move the sector beyond fragmented technical questions associated with intensification and expansion, social and environmental impacts, and toward system-based approaches that address interconnected sustainability issues.

Capacity development workshop on Anticipatory Action

december, 2022
Sri Lanka

To enhance disaster management strategies in Sri Lanka, crucial change from reactive to proactive approach is important. Anticipatory Action, a proactive approach, involves early risk identification, monitoring, and preparedness measures. Establishing an Anticipatory Action framework requires collaboration and awareness among relevant agencies. A comprehensive two-day residence training program, designed by World Vision Lanka (WVL) and the International Water Management Institute (IWMI), aimed to equip government agencies with skills to develop Anticipatory Action protocols.

Key lessons on the change processes that drive agroecological transitions in Zimbabwe

december, 2022
Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s agri-food systems face a range of challenges. While upwards of 70% of Zimbabwe’s population works in agriculture, the sector generates only 17% of GDP (FAO, 2023). Livestock production contributes an additional 35% of GDP and is equally common, with 60% of the population owning cattle and 70-90% owning goats. Zimbabwe experiences a single rainy season that historically runs from November to March. Rainfall is limited and erratic, and peasant farmers have access to under 5% of national irrigation facilities (FAO, 2023).

Integrated aquaculture-agriculture: Fish culture and plant crops module for arid areas

december, 2022
Malaysia

This guide explains the integration between fish culture and conventional crop agriculture and discusses
how farmers can maximize benefits from using these resources. The main concept for any system of
integration is that the outputs of one organism or system function as a source of inputs for another
organism or system. For fish farmers, this concept applies to the relationship between fish and crops, as theoutputs of the fish can be a rich source of nutrients for crops.

Exploring and analysing practices and pathways to improve resource use efficiency of crop-livestock farming systems in North-western Bangladesh

december, 2022
Bangladesh

As the global population continues to grow, the urgency of addressing food sovereignty challenges becomes increasingly apparent. Bangladesh, being a densely populated country, encounters significant hurdles in livestock production sectors the high population density leads to a substantial demand for food, resulting in increased resource requirements. This study aimed to explore and analyse new pathways and practices to improve resource use efficiency of smallholder crop-livestock farms in northwest Bangladesh.

Challenges and opportunities to scaling smallholder mechanization in Kenya, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe

december, 2022

As governments heighten the drive to mechanize agriculture, critical information is required on (i) existing mechanization options, (ii) barriers and challenges, (iii) opportunities for scaling and effective demand for mechanization. This paper combines quantitative and qualitative surveys to help elucidate on some of these key issues in Kenya, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe where mechanization is part of national policy priorities. Data were collected through Qualitative surveys involving 484 participants in focus group discussions and 109 key informants.
