Inclusive co-design of system innovations incorporates diverse perspectives and bodies of knowledge that can generate solutions that fit well in a local context and over time influence the socio-technical regime. In operationalizing system transformation-oriented co-design processes, research and development actors have experimented in recent decades with the role of multistakeholder approaches. A specific application of such approaches in the agrifood system context are Agricultural Innovation Platforms (AIPs).

Livestock production supports economic growth, jobs and nutrition, but contributes to and is vulnerable to climate change. A transition is thus needed for livestock systems to become more sustainable and climate resilient, with clear positive effects on the Sustainable Development Goals. It is unclear, however, where the global community should invest to support this change. We identified priority geographies for livestock system investments in 132 low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), at mid- and low latitudes.

Silvopastoral systems benefit invertebrate biodiversity on tropical livestock farms in Caquetá, Colombia

In the Colombian Amazon, there has been long-term and sustained loss of primary forest threatening biodiversity and climate change mitigation. Silvopastoral practices that integrate trees into livestock production could help address both local economic and wider environmental challenges. We aimed to assess the effects of silvopastoral practices on invertebrate communities on smallholder farms in Caquetá, Colombia. Using sweep nets and malaise trapping, invertebrate communities were compared between traditional pasture, silvopasture and forest edge habitats.

Climate Finance Mapping in Mali and Senegal

The objective of this study is to review promised climate change financing allocated and available for the livestock sector and compare financing for adaptation to that for mitigation for Mali and Senegal. This includes a desk review of proposed or existing projects and examines the allocation of resources for climate adaptation and mitigation in livestock production systems or to support livestock-related livelihoods.

The second round of livestock feed and forage technology media engagement

During the first round of media engagement, media assessment was conducted in three regions (Amhara, Oromia and SNNPR), aiming to identify appropriate regional radio stations, paving the way for a possible partnership with the media houses and understanding capacity (training) needs for journalists. As a result, Debre Birhan Fana FM 94.0 / Debre Birhan, OBN FM 96.5 / Bale and, Hosaena FM 95.3 / Hossaena were identified as appropriate regional radio stations.

Unexploited economic and environmental benefits from cultivated forages in Zambia

Abstract Livestock production is critical for improved food and nutrition security, sustainability of ecosystems, and resilience. Zambia, like many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, aspires to increase livestock’s contribution to the Gross Domestic Product and generate economic opportunities. Global environmental change, however, and the potential of ruminant production to exacerbate it, requires the implementation of innovative and pragmatic technologies for mitigation of and adaptation to the adverse effects of environmental change.
