Promoting Green Urban Development in African Cities

ноября, 2015

The city of Kampala has undergone a
period of rapid urbanization that has contributed to the
degradation of the city’s natural environment. The urban
environmental profile for Kampala has been prepared as the
first component of the assignment promoting green urban
development in Africa: enhancing the relationship between
urbanization, environmental assets, and ecosystem services,
a project being conducted under the leadership of the World

Water and Climate Adaptation Plan for the Sava River Basin

ноября, 2015

This report presents the water and
climate adaptation plan (WATCAP) developed for the Sava
river basin (SRB) as result of a study undertaken by the
World Bank. The WATCAP is intended to help to bridge the gap
between the climate change predictions for the SRB and the
decision makers in current and planned water management
investment projects that will be affected by changing

Jobs and Land Use within Cities

ноября, 2015

Over the last century, the urban spatial
structure of cities has transformed dramatically from the
traditional monocentric configuration to varying forms of
decentralized organization. This paper reviews the theory
and empirical evidence to understand the urban morphology of
jobs and land use within a city. This survey highlights four
broad insights: (i) The evolution of monocentric to
polycentric centers has been accompanied by structural

Cote d’Ivoire Urbanization Review

ноября, 2015

Well-managed urbanization can accelerate
Cote d’Ivoire’s ascendance to middle incomes. Such a large
gap in gross national income (GNI) per capita means that the
underlining economic drivers of urbanization are not being
fully harnessed in Cote d’Ivoire. Small cities at low
urbanization level facilitate internal scale economies, such
as hosting a large firm transforming local agricultural
products. Secondary cities at intermediate urbanization

Modeling the Marginal Value of Rainforest Losses

ноября, 2015

A rainforest can be modeled as a dynamic
asset subject to various risks, including risk of fire. Any
small part of the forest can be in one of two states: either
untouched by forest fire, or already damaged by fire, in
which case there is both a local forest loss and increased
dryness over a broader area. In this paper, two Bellman
equations are constructed, one for unharmed forest and a
second for already burnt forest. The analysis solves the two

Agricultural Risk Management in the Face of Climate Change

ноября, 2015

Climate change is becoming a source of
significant additional risks for agriculture and food
systems. Climate projections suggest that impacts will
include shifting average growing conditions, increase
climate and weather variability, and more uncertainty in
predicting tomorrow’s climate and weather conditions.
Agricultural risk management (ARM) is ideally placed to
support stakeholders in building resilience to these

Value of Improved Information about Forest Protection Values, with Application to Rainforest Valuation

ноября, 2015

What is the utility from obtaining more
precise values of natural resource objects (rainforests),
through surveys or other similar information gathering? In
the value of information problems studied here, a principal
who wishes to preserve a resource sets a price to offer to a
seller without knowing precisely the protection value or
opportunity value, to the seller. The value of information
related to more precise information about the protection

Managing Environmental and Social Risks in Development Policy Financing

ноября, 2015

Effective environmental and social risk
management in development policy financing (DPF) is central
to achieving the World Bank’s goals of ending extreme
poverty and promoting shared prosperity in a sustainable
manner. If the World Bank is supporting far-reaching member
country reforms that are intended to contribute to the twin
goals, then it should seek to understand the impact of those
reforms on the poor. It should also ensure that the
