Describes the Ethiopian highlands assessing their potential for improved agricultural production; reports ILCA's studies on the traditional smallholder production system of the highlands; and analyzes productivity aspects of the system's crop and livestock components. Discusses the approach to farming systems research (FSR) along with the implications for adoption of the approach and its results by a national agency, some research experiences and the outlook for future research.

Discusses pastoral systems research (PSR) within the framework of the experience of livestock and pastoral development in Africa during the last 50 years, analyzing data on livestock population & productivity in relation to the welfare of pastoralists; and examines previous efforts in pastoral development relevant to PSR approach.

A guideline for carrying out regional trials in cassava is given, including necessary steps (identification of collaborators, selection of sites, identification of person in charge, planting and harvesting season, exptl. design, plot size, and border rows); the technology used (selection and treatment of cuttings, plant density, land preparation, planting position, application of herbicides and fertilizers, pest and disease control); necessary visits (a min. of 7); and final agronomic trials to determine optimum density and age of var. at harvest.

In May 1980 the soil section of CIAT's cassava program established a fertilization trial with 3 cassava var. [Barranquena (regional), M Col 113, and CMC 921 to measure its effect on yield and establish optimum levels from an economical point of view. The trial took place in Mondomito and Agua Blanca, municipality of Santander de Quilichao, Cauca (Colombia). Twelve levels of NPK (0-0- 0; 0-100-100; 50-100-100; 100-100-100; 200-100-100; 100-0-100; 100- 50-100; 100-200-100; 100-100-0; 100-100-50; 100-100-200; 200-200- 200) were applied. Partial budgeting was used for the economic analysis.

With the purpose of bringing new ideas to bear on the subject of institutional support to forest policy implementation, a Consultation sponsored by FAO and the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) was held at FAO Headquarters in Rome from 2 to 11 February 1983. Twenty-nine participants attended In their individual capacities, drawn from 24 countries of Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America and from a very wide spectrum of disciplines. This issue of Unasylva presents a selection of the papers discussed at the Consultation.

A fin de recoger nuevas ideas relativas al tema del respaldo institucional a la aplicacin de la poltica forestal, se celebr una Consulta de Expertos sobre Administracin Forestal para el Desarrollo patrocinada por la FAO y la Oficina Central Sueca para la Ayuda Internacional (SIDA) en la sede de la FAO, en Roma, del 2 al 11 de febrero de 1983. Asistieron a titulo personal veintinueve expertos de una amplia gama de disciplinas provenientes de 24 pases de Africa, Asia, Europa, Amrica Latina y Amrica del Norte. Este nmero de Unasylva presenta una seleccin de los documentos debatidos.

The study was carried out on twelve runoff
plots installed at Kabete Campus Field Station,
University of Nairobi, on a 10% natural slope of
eutric Nitisol to assess the effect of grass strips
in controlling soil loss and runoff on sloping land.
Four treatments, a control plot without grass strip
and three different widths (0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 m.) of
Nandi setaria (Setaria anceps), were tested under
natural rainfall during 1982 and 1983, simulated
runoff, and simulated rainfall of 80 mm/hr.

This report exemplifies the short, well-focuses formal survey emphasized in CIMMYT's on-farm research procedures. The survey was done in northern Veracruz, Mexico, where CIMMYT Maize Production Training carries out on-farm experiments. The report summarizes farmers' circumstances, describes management practices in maize, and draws conclusions for research opportunities.
