The study’s findings offer the most compelling quantitative evidence to date of the unparalleled role that forest peoples have to play in climate change mitigation, reinforcing the critical importance of collective tenure security for the sustainable use and protection of the world’s tropical forests and the carbon they sequester.
A new report offers evidence that the modest investments needed to secure land rights for indigenous communities will generate billions in returns—economically, socially and environmentally—for local communities and the world’s changing climate. The report, Climate Benefits, Tenure Costs: The Economic Case for Securing Indigenous Land Rights, quantifies for the first time the economic value of securing land rights for the communities who live in and protect forests, with a focus on Colombia, Brazil, and Bolivia.

This paper reports on research conducted for the Indigenous Land Corporation, an Australian government agency concerned with the acquisition and management of lands for indigenous peoples. The paper seeks to identify and analyze the kinds of institutional arrangements that might be deployed to support indigenous communities in the management of indigenous-owned land. It is concerned with a particular planning context in which the role of state agencies is focused on supporting and facilitating the work of indigenous landowners.
1. The Special Rapporteur on the rights of indigenous peoples, Victoria Tauli-Corpuz, visited Brazil from 7 to 17 March 2016, at the invitation of the Government. The purpose of the visit was to identify and assess the main issues currently facing indigenous peoples in the country and to follow up on key recommendations made in 2009 by the previous mandate holder, following his visit to Brazil.

Quila Quila refleja un caso de disputa de pueblos indígenas originarios ante el Estado, por la defensa de su territorio y reconocimiento de su autonomía. Sus luchas datan de la invasión española, han estado latentes durante la república, y se articulan a la disputa abierta por los territorios indígenas de fines de siglo XX, así como el cambio constitucional entre el 2006 y 2009.
La familia mapuce de María del Carmen Puel vive ancestralmente en su territorio y desde el año 2000, se constituyen, junto a otras cuatro familias, como comunidad “Plácido Puel”, luchando por defender su territorio de las amenazas de las inversiones inmobiliarias ligadas al turismo, que pretenden quitarles sus tierras
Se trata de un caso de resistencia a la ofensiva gubernamental ante los proyectos de infraestructura. La defensa del territorio indígena actualiza el derecho colectivo a la tierra y por ende fortalece las estructuras organizativas de la población.
