This concept paper provides a road map for preparing a National Land Use Policy for the Republic of Kenya.  The need for a National Land Use Policy cannot be over emphasized.  Two important Government policy documents recognize and emphasize the importance of a National Land Use Policy in guiding the management and use of land in the country.  These are the National Land policy, Sessional Paper No. 3 of 2009 and the Kenya Vision 2030.

This Concept paper is in reality “a comprehensive road map” towards the realization of a National Spatial Plan. Its preparation is related to the country’s policy framework, the Kenya Vision 2030 and the National Land Policy and goes further to define National Spatial Plan; summarize the challenges that have
arisen due to lack of this plan and the benefits expected from its implementation. The concept elaborates the scope, methodology and an estimated budget for its preparation.

This brochure provides the necessary information for people living in communal areas to have their land rights registered.  The brochure also tackles why land has to be registered; who is responsible for the various aspects of the process; and how land disputes are handled.

The findings of this study by Urban LandMark,Universidade Eduardo Modlane and Universidade Pedagógica tell an important story of the significance of local land practices in creating opportunities for urban dwellers to secure land rights in the absence of an accessible and affordable formal system. And the findings not only shed light on our understanding of how urban territory is carved up and managed; they underscore the ways in which we conceptualise African cities, with implications for both urban theory and practice.

Supported by the Austrian Development Agency, the programme was launched in 2007, and has since provided policymakers, development practitioners and those involved in local governance with a variety of regional platforms on which to share their experiences of decentralised land-reform processes and to derive lessons related to best practice that can inform and improve policy-making.

Since the 2008 food price crisis, foreign investors have been acquiring more and more land in poor countries for producing foodstuffs and biofuels for their own use. Such investments have the potential to promote rural development and food security worldwide. By the same token, however, there is the danger of countless small farmers losing their land, of food insecurity increasing in many places, and of social and ecological systems collapsing through pure "land grabbing".
