Accessing local markets: Marketsheds

Across Africa buying and selling connects people. For a small-scale farmer, this trade takes place primarily within a limited geographic area based on access to market centers of a given size. The maps illustrate these areas using different colors to represent marketsheds—geographical areas and associated populations that are part of real or potential trade networks with a given market. From any location within a marketshed, it takes less time to travel to the corresponding market compared to any neighboring markets.

The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) business-asusual projections of agricultural supply and demand anticipate a rise in food prices of most cereals and meats, reversing long-established downward trends. Between 2005 and 2050, food prices for maize, rice, and wheat are projected to increase by 104, 79, and 88 percent, respectively, while those for beef, pork, and poultry will rise by 32, 70, and 77 percent, respectively.

Land Access and Youth Livelihood: Opportunities in Southern Ethiopia

This study aims to examine current land access and youth livelihood opportunities in Southern Ethiopia. We used survey data from the relatively land abundant districts of Oromia Region and from the land scarce districts of Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples' (SNNP) Region. Although access to agricultural land is a constitutional right for rural residents of Ethiopia, we found that youth in the rural south have limited potential to obtain agricultural land that can be a basis for viable livelihood. The law prohibits the purchase and sale of land in Ethiopia.

Multinational companies are increasingly promoted as peacebuilders. Major arguments in support of such a position emphasise both interest-based and norm/socialisation-based factors. This article uses research on large mining MNCs in eastern DRC – those that, arguably, should be most likely to build peace according to the above positions – to engage critically with the business for peace agenda. First it demonstrates the limited peacemaking, as well as active peacebuilding, activities in broader society that companies undertake.

This article aims specific markets agricultural land prices determination and forecast using hedonic prices methodology. The absence of official or trustworthy information on land prices makes this very important in Brazil. This multiple regression model has as dependent variable the price per hectare and the next explanatory variables: physical attributes (soil, relief), production (systems of production, localization, access), and infrastructure of the property and expectations (regional situation, local investments).

The article examines the key aspect of land relations – the possibility of appropriation and existing approaches to the re-distribution of land rent. Examination of rent relations begins with the analysis of approaches to the solution of this problem in classical economic theory. We have systematized existing approaches to the definition of the essence of rent. We have classified the types of rent with their detailed characteristics. We have established existing problems in the realization of rent relations at present time.

The aim of this study was to compare the agricultural land market in Poland and in the selected countries of the European Union. The present paper compares the price changes of agricultural land in Poland and the EU. This research contains the information on institutions involved in agricultural land management in the selected EU countries. The paper presents the current state of the Polish market and its prospects for the land. Therefore, the development of the agricultural real estate market in Poland covers the years from 2004 to 2012.

Currently, most Republic of Moldova agribusinesses operate in areas leased from the owners land. The operations on land lease from farms is met less frequently as it causes a range of problems - from issurance of documents and determination of the lease payment to the accounting for expenditure and income. Fair and prompt settlement of these issues is imperative of time and can contribute greatly to extend lease operations and make more efficient the use of land.
