In recent years, growing economic globalisation has been accompanied by rising social support for market systems as a means of managing resource-use. In turn, the free market movement considers definite and secure property rights (especially private rights and, sometimes, communal rights) in resources to be the necessary basis for a desirable market system. Global policies for managing the Earth’s genetic resources have been influenced by this approach.

Este artículo propone algunas reflexiones críticas sobre la tradición creciente de implementación de políticas públicas de regularización de asentamientos informales en áreas urbanas, con el objetivo de contribuir para que el proceso de crecimiento informal de las ciudades latinoamericanas sea enfrentado de manera más adecuada.

O desenvolvimento da agricultura e da pecuária na Amazônia tem resultado na expansão dos desmatamentos, o que contribui para emissão de gases de efeito estufa na atmosfera e redução da biodiversidade. A evolução dos desmatamentos realizada pelos produtores rurais é condicionada por características das famílais produtoras e pelo ambiente socioeconômico. O objetivo desse estudo foi identificar os condicionantes de desmatamentos nos principais pólos de produção agropecuária familiar no estado do Acre. Foi utilizado o modelo econométrico logit multinomial para essa avaliação.

This paper introduces and applies an analytical framework to study how formal andinformal institutions influence socio–economic change and poverty reduction inrural Cambodia, giving specific reference to property rights and collective action. Itfocuses on emerging endogenous mechanisms of cooperation as well as on the roleof external actors and instruments in forming or enhancing collective actioninstitutions, and enforcing use and ownership rights among the rural poor.

This paper presents a conceptual framework on how institutions of property rightsand collective action can contribute to poverty reduction, including through externalinterventions and action by poor people themselves. The first part of the paperexamines the initial conditions of poverty, highlighting the role of assets, risks andvulnerability, legal structures and power relations.
