Trading Places: Accessing Land in African Cities

Journal Articles & Books
ноября, 2013
Africa

Trading Places is about urban land markets in African cities. It explores how local practice, land governance and markets interact to shape the ways that people at society's margins access land to build their livelihoods.

The authors argue that the problem is not with markets per se, but in the unequal ways in which market access is structured. They make the case for more equal access to urban land markets, not only for ethical reasons, but because it makes economic sense for growing cities and towns.

Reports & Research

Global

There are 1.4 billion poor people living on less than US$1.25 a day. One billion of them live in rural areas where agriculture is their main source of livelihood. The ‘green revolution’ in agriculture that swept large parts of the developing world during the 1960s and 1970s dramatically increased agricultural productivity and reduced poverty. Many of the productivity gains accrued to smallholder farmers, supported through research and extension services.

Agrarian Transitions in Two Agroecosystems of Kayah State, Myanmar

Reports & Research
октября, 2013
Myanmar

... Located on Myanmar’s eastern border with Thailand, Kayah State has long been isolated because of conflicts between the minority groups there and the Burmese army; as a result, little is known about its agricultural systems. As a preliminary to NGO agricultural development projects, an agrarian diagnosis of two major types of agroecosystems in the state—lowlands alluvial plains and uplands—was conducted. The objective was to identify recent agrarian changes leading to the current presence of different types of farmers in each area and understand their development potential.

Are Microcredit Borrowers in Bangladesh Over-indebted ?

октября, 2013

Microcredit programs in Bangladesh have
experienced spectacular growth in recent years, with a
growing number of borrowers availing credit from multiple
microcredit agencies. There is a growing concern that if
there are not sufficient returns to borrowing from
microfinance institutions (MFIS), some borrowers might be
taking loans that they will not be able to repay. A
household may be considered over-indebted, for example, if

The Impact of Economic Policies on Poverty and Income Distribution : Evaluation Techniques and Tools

августа, 2013

Development is about fundamental change
in economic structures, about the movement of resources out
of agriculture to services and industry, about migration to
cities and international movement of labor, and about
transformation in trade and technology. Social inclusion and
change-change in health and life expectancy, in education
and literacy, in population size and structure, and in
gender relations-are at the heart of the story. The policy
