The typical response to the loss of forest cover has been to plant trees, usually, but not always, on an industrial scale, and with a limited mix of species. Indeed, planted forests now make up 7 percent of the world’s forest area and contribute over 40 percent of the global industrial wood and fibre supply (FAO, 2010). 

Ghana’s work to promote the legal timber trade, in partnership with the European Union (EU), strongly emphasizes involving local communities who live in or near forests. Yet many farmers and communities don’t understand their rights, which means that illegal activity by loggers has gone unchecked in Ghana’s off-reserve forests.

Degradation of forests can have severe negative local impacts and far-reaching consequences, including soil erosion, loss of biodiversity, greenhouse gas emissions, dust storms, diminished livelihood opportunities and reduced yields of forest products and services. Reversing the adverse conditions requires urgent and scaled-up action, through scientific and holistic landscape-level restoration approaches, balancing both socio-economic and environmental goals and the diverse needs of various sectors and stakeholders in the landscape.

This publication provides facts, figures and key messages to encourage more investments in forest and landscape restoration, leading to more restoration action. The Global Partnership on Forest and Landscape Restoration outlines how we can reach the 2020 and 2030 targets, and how we can best collaborate, using regional and global platforms.

s outlined in Kenya’s REDD+ Readiness Preparation Proposal (R-PP) the Government of Kenya was in the process of developing its national strategy for participating in an evolving international mechanism for reducing GHG emissions arising from deforestation and forest degradation while conserving sustainably managing available carbon stock and where opportunities present enhancing forest carbon stocks. This process required enhanced institutional capabilities to undertake mandatory assessment of performance through regular and detailed monitoring of forest carbon stocks.

The Voluntary Guidelines on the Responsible Governance of Tenure of Land, Fisheries and Forests in the Context of National Food Security (VGGT) set out internationally-accepted principles and standards for responsible practices, providing a framework for governments, the private sector and civil society to use when developing policies and programmes for improving food security.

Restoration in Niger and neighbouring countries has helped to “re-green” vast areas of rural West Africa with impressive results for agriculture and livelihoods – and at very low cost.*

Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration involves restoring degraded lands at large scale by harnessing the self-interest of smallholder farmers themselves. It involves the systematic regrowth and management of trees and shrubs from felled tree stumps, sprouting root systems or seeds.

Pig-rearing, essential oils, fruit trees and beekeeping: establishing additional sources of income has been key to a restoration project on the biodiversity-rich island of Madagascar.*

Forest loss and degradation have plagued Madagascar’s unique biological diversity. Direct causes include slash-and-burn agriculture for subsistence crops. As a result, the island’s evergreen forest is severely fragmented. While tree planting had occurred in the past, it centred on exotic species with limited social and ecological benefits.
