Climate, Security and Food Systems in Kenya

декабря, 2021
Kenya

In its Phase 1 (September to December 2022) the Climate, Security and Food Systems theme workstream of the HDP coalition worked together with its members to collate state-of-the-art evidence on the connection between climate, food, and peace and security. This brief summarises the latest research conducted by CGIAR FOCUS Climate Security for the country of Kenya as validated by the members of the Climate, Security and Food systems workstream. CGIAR FOCUS Climate Security has developed a Climate Security Observatory (CSO) within the ONECGIAR Climate Resilience Initiative.

Plot-level impacts of improved lentil varieties in Bangladesh

декабря, 2021
Bangladesh

The advent of improved lentil varieties (ILVs) in the mid-1990s solved the disease problem which almost halted lentil production in Bangladesh. Levels of adoption of ILVs have been documented in the literature, but little is known about their impacts. Applying an instrumental variables regression to data collected from a sample of 1,694 lentil plots and DNA fingerprinting for varietal identification, this study provides estimates of the plot-level impacts of adoption of ILVs in Bangladesh.

Information and communication technology-based service platform enabling the co-creation of agrometeorological services: A case study of the Laos Climate Services for Agriculture

декабря, 2021
Global

Climate services for agriculture (agrometeorological services) are only possible through collaborative, interdisciplinary efforts. To this end, a national-scale service operated by centralized governments will mandate institutional coordination for data sharing, in addition to designated staff time and budget commitments for effective and sustainable operation; however, previous efforts have revealed that institutional coordination, particularly between meteorology and agriculture, represents the most difficult part preventing successful implementation in most countries.

Towards sustainable groundwater systems in South Asia: Data exploration in Nalanda district in Bihar, India

декабря, 2021
India

Groundwater resources and irrigation systems are a fundamental consideration for sustainable and inclusive food system transitions in South Asia. Over the course of the latter part of the 20th century and the early 21st century, groundwater has become the primary source of irrigation water across South Asia and globally. The aquifers in Western and Peninsula regions in South Asia have faced water scarcity and groundwater depletion. But in the Eastern Gangetic Plains, aquifers are still considered underutilized by most planners and policymakers.

Maize variety preferences among smallholder farmers in Ethiopia: Implications for demand-led breeding and seed sector development

декабря, 2021
Ethiopia

Among smallholder maize farmers in Ethiopia (and similar areas in Africa), yield and stress tolerance traits in maize varieties are important. While high yields remain a major objective, breeding and seed system development programs are increasingly based on the recognition that farmers also have an interest in other agronomic and consumption traits. In this paper we illustrate these issues by measuring the trade-offs farmers may be willing to make for specific traits in the mid-altitude maize markets in Ethiopia.

Drought Monitoring and assessment using earth observation data for Zambia

декабря, 2021
Zambia

This study attempts to identify the spatial-temporal extent of the agricultural drought in Zambia using remote sensing data and crop production. IDSI is superior in terms of its performance and drought detection capability and is characterized by better representation of drought severity. Also VCI, IDSI and SPI indices were found to be very useful in monitoring the spatial-temporal extent of agricultural and climatic drought in the country.

The Climate Security Index - A methodological note

декабря, 2021

In this methodological note, we propose a quantitative framework to develop a Climate and Security Index (CSI), for measuring and monitoring climate security vulnerability. Primarily meant for long-term planning and decision making for resilience building, it incorporates a broad range of drivers of the climate-security nexus, including those from climatic, conflict, socioeconomic, agricultural, and contextual (i.e., mitigating factors, adaptive capacity) dimensions, to indicate climate-security risks at subnational level.

Resilient Aquatic Food Systems Initiative Launch in Zambia: work package 5 Technologies Assessment

декабря, 2021
Zambia

The Resilient Aquatic Food Systems Initiatives (RAqFS) focuses on research-for development
to catalyze the scaling of transformative innovations, policies and approaches to support aquatic foods in delivering more sustainable and healthy diets and livelihoods within planetary boundaries by 2030. RAqFS works through five Work Packages bundled together to deliver socio-technical innovations and policy actions that deliver benefits to all five One CGIAR Impact Areas. Apart from WP1 (which includes

Pathways for food and land use systems to contribute to global biodiversity targets

декабря, 2021
Global

Biodiversity flourishes in areas where natural processes, such as plant and animal reproduction and dispersion, take place without human interruption. At present, we estimate that such land where natural processes predominate (LNPP) covers 56% of terrestrial land. Here, the evolution of global biodiversity is modelled, as indicated by LNPP, for two scenarios for food and land-use systems change to 2050: a “Current Trends” pathway, based on current policies and historical trends, and a “Sustainable” pathway, depicting ambitious assumptions aimed at sustainable development.
