This paper proposes a method for identifying and defining the most significant actors in sustain- able forest management. A rationale for the importance of differentiating among various forest stakeholders is first provided. Significant stakeholders identified in forest management units in Kalimantan, Côte d'Ivoire, and the USA. are described.

En el Ecuador durante siglos los cambios en el paisaje agrario se dieron de manera paulatina, casi imperceptibles, a penas visibles. A finales del siglo XIX y en las primeras décadas del siglo XX las técnicas de producción y los principios consuetudinarios que reglan el aprovechamiento de los recursos cambian de manera más acelerada. Los tiempos se acortan y las transformaciones en el paisaje se vuelven evidentes. Es más, se busca el cambio, se lo provoca. La sociedad se proyecta políticamente hacia adelante con miras a transformarse y sepultar la barbarie del pasado colonial.

This issue of Unasylva commemorates 50 years of FAO's experience in and commitment to international forestry development. Notwithstanding this focus, the issue is essentially forward-looking. Articles written by senior officers of the Forestry Department consider key issues facing world forestry today, and challenges for the future. Lessons are also drawn from past experience.

This presentation brings together information from the Global Forest Resources Assessment 1990, the FAO Yearbook of Forest Products, the 1994 State of Food and Agriculture special chapter, ‘Forest Development and Policy Dilemmas’, the Forestry Chapter of Agriculture Towards 2010 and The Challenge of Sustainable Forest Management. These FAO reports analyse the state of forest resources and the role of forests in sustainable development, and provide background information for FAO's report to the Secretariat of the Commission on Sustainable Development.

Forecasts for the forest resource and roundwood supply are one of the two fundamental parts of ETTS V (the other is consumption and production projections). National ETTS V correspondents were asked to provide detailed forecasts for the area, growing stock, increment, fellings and removals of their countries at 10 year intervals from 1990 to 2040. These replies were then checked and analysed, and are presented in this Working Paper, in full detail.
