Designing Quasi-Experimental Impact Studies of Agricultural Research at Scale

Providing credible and quantifiable measures of the impact of CGIAR innovations at scale has always been a challenge. Recent SPIA-supported research has attempted to address this challenge using quasi-experimental approaches to assessing impact. This technical note details some of these completed and ongoing studies and approaches, focusing on the identification strategies used to infer causal impact, and the kinds of diverse data sets that may be brought to bear in making these inferences.

The high mountains stretch over 20.4% of Nepal’s land surface with diverse climatic conditions and associated vegetation types. An understanding of tree species and forest structural pattern variations across different climatic regions is crucial for mountain ecology. This study strived to carry out a comparative evaluation of species diversity, main stand variables, and canopy cover of forests with contrasting precipitation conditions in the Annapurna range. Firstly, climate data provided by CHELSA version 1.2, were used to identify distinct precipitation regimes.

We conducted a baseline survey to appraise the current potato practices and farming systems in the Adamawa
and West regions of Cameroon where a GIZ-funded project (ONE WORLD – No Hunger, or SEWOH) titled "Green
Innovation Centers for the Agricultural and Food Sector" (ProCISA) is being implemented. We employed a mix
of qualitative and quantitative methods to gather and analyze data/information. This study focused on potato
farmers that have been into potato production for at least two years.

Payments for conservation of animal genetic resources in agriculture: One size fits all?

Maintaining minimum population sizes for local livestock breeds is a key goal in the conservation of animal genetic resources. As markets and livestock production systems have tended to favour a narrow base of high-output improved breeds, countries have had to use financial and other incentives to motivate breeders to keep local breeds. This paper explores the potential for more cost-effective alternatives to the most commonly used financial incentive, a fixed payment per animal or livestock unit.

Its purpose is to serve potato farmers - 1 -in the Asia Pacific region and improve the ability to solve potato late blight in the region. At present, the AsiaBlight Network has more than 300 members in China.
