Como muestran los artculos de este nmero, los bosques contribuyen a la seguridad alimentaria y al sustento sostenible de diversos modos, directa e indirectamente, sirviendo de apoyo a los sistemas agrcolas, correspondindoles un papel en el desarrollo rural y en el mantenimiento de la integridad ecolgica y en la creacin de oportunidades de empleo y generacin de ingresos.

This forty-page paper is the second of three reports on forest resources in Madagascar. It is compose of five main parts focusing on the review, compilation and analysis of data related the industrial forest plantations sector in the country. The main topics discussed are the actual state of industrial plantations, the analysis of trends, etc. A complete conclusion is provided followed by a series of tables in the annexes.

The development of agricultural technologies and a better appreciation of the existing but under-utilised knowledge of resource management will be crucial in meeting the ecological needs and in achieving the anticipated food demands of the growing population in the future. The greatest challenge for the coming decades lies in the fact that the production environments are unstable and degrading. Land degradation is proceeding so fast that unless policies and approaches change, many countries will not be able to achieve sustainable agriculture in the foreseeable future.

Este nmero de Unasylva no se articula en torno a un tema especfico, sino que recoge varias cuestiones implcitas y relativas al concepto de los programas forestales nacionales.

An analysis of the present state of forest plantations and of current trends in plantation forestry both on a global basis and region-by-region. Economic and policy considerations in the development of plantation forestry are discussed. The outlook for plantation forestry is then presented in the form of alternative scenarios according to future growth in plantation area.

Un rapport complet, long de quarante-trois pages qui traite de l'état général des données sur les ressources forestières en Mauritanie. Il est composé de sept parties principales ; la première partie est une introduction générale des caractéristiques géographiques, démographiques etc. du pays pendant que la deuxième partie est un compte-rendu détaillé de l'importance et de la répartition des plantations forestières en fonction des zones écologiques du pays. La troisième et la quatrième partie exposent des détailles sur l'évolution et la structure de ces surfaces forestières.

Ce numro d'Unasylva est centr sur les enjeux de la conservation et de l'utilisation des arbres hors forts.

This medium-size report identifies the overall situation of data related to fuelwood in Mali. The first part is a very brief introduction to the situation in the country. The second part is a summary of the agro-ecological situation in Mali followed by a third part that identifies the principal production and consumption figures of wood energy. The fourth part is a comparison between the data made available by FAO and that collected in the field while the last part analyses the past, present and future trends of fuelwood use at the national and private level.

Comme le suggrent les articles de ce numro, les forts contribuent la scurit alimentaire et aux moyens de subsistance durables par bien des aspects, non seulement directement mais aussi indirectement, en renforant les systmes agricoles, en favorisant le dveloppement rural, mais aussi en prservant l'intgrit de l'environnement et en fournissant des possibilits de revenu et d'emploi.
