Door de grote druk op de beschikbare ruimte in Nederland is er een voordurende vraag naar actuele informatie over het grondgebruik. Het uitgangspunt bij het vervaardigen van de derde versie van het Landelijk Grondgebruiksbestand Nederland (LGN3) waren: de strata in het LGN2-bestand, Landsat-TM-satellietbeelden uit 1995 en 1997, de Top10-vector van de Topografische Dienst Nederland en de landbouwstatistieken van het Centraal Bureau voor Statistiek. De informatie in LGN3 is opgeslagen in de vorm van rastercellen van 25 bij 25 meter, overeenkomend met een schaal 1 : 50 000.

This basic enactment of the Palestinian Legislative creates a framework for the protection of the environment, public health and biodiversity in Palestine including marine areas. Its 82 sections are divided into 5 Titles: Definitions and general provisions (I); Environmental protection (II); Environmental impact assessment, licensing, inspection and administrative procedure (III); Penalties (IV); Final provisions (V). Article 1 contains an extensive list of definitions, including "natural reserves" and "international waters". Objectives of this Law are set out in article 2.

This issue of Unasylva contains, as promised in the previous edition, additional articles on sustainable mountain development. These articles help to complete the focus on the topic and should also help to promote interest in the recently declared International Year of the Mountain (2000) for which FAO has been designated lead agency status within the United Nations system.

The range of efforts required to develop the full potential of NWFPs is wide indeed. Land-use and forest policies need to be evaluated and where necessary adapted to ensure that potential impacts on non-wood forest resources and products are taken into consideration. Increased research on the abundance, distribution, biology and ecology of non-wood forest resources is essential. Of particular importance are investigations into ways to improve the employment- and income-generating potential of NWFPs through better harvesting, storage, transport, processing, manufacturing and marketing.
