Promoting Responsible Governance of Investments in Land (RGIL) in Laos

Policy Papers & Briefs
декабря, 2022
Laos

Laos plans to graduate from least developed country status by 2024. To spur economic growth,
the Lao government builds on a resource-based export economy, major mining projects, the
constructions of dams, and the expansion of plantation agriculture. A key focus is the promotion
of foreign direct investment in agriculture and forestry, to promote technology transfer for

Utiliser le dialogue pour remédier aux conflits fonciers

Reports & Research
декабря, 2022
Cameroun

Rural Agriculture and Poverty Trap: Can Climate-Smart Innovations Provide Breakeven Solutions to Smallholder Farmers?

Peer-reviewed publication
декабря, 2022
Ghana

Agriculture is widely recognized as a solution to food insecurity and poverty, especially in rural areas. However, 75% of the world’s poor live in rural areas, and agriculture is the primary source of their livelihood. One may wonder if the observed correlation between agriculture and poverty also suggests causation. If that is the case, then what such causal relationship might exist? Is agriculture a vehicle for poverty alleviation or a source of poverty trap?

Analyzing the Connection between Customary Land Rights and Land Grabbing: A Case Study of Zambia

Peer-reviewed publication
декабря, 2022
Zambia

Since the global crises in the 2000s, many foreign and domestic actors have acquired large tracts of land for food and biofuel crop cultivation and other purposes in Africa, often leading to the displacement of the African people living on customary land. The weak customary land rights of ordinary African people have been viewed as one of the main factors making it possible for various land-grabbers to exploit customary land with different purposes.

Impact of Land Tenure Security Perception on Tree Planting Investment in Vietnam

Peer-reviewed publication
декабря, 2022
Global

With over 14 million hectares allocated, Vietnam’s forest and forestland allocation has been one of the largest natural resource decentralization programs in the developing world over the last three decades. Given this remarkable achievement, critics are concerned about the low rates of household tree planting investment and question the roles and effects of land institutions on investment.

Conflict Resolution between Multi-Level Government and Farmers in Land Expropriation Based on Institutional Credibility Theory: Empirical Evidence from Shandong Province, China

Peer-reviewed publication
декабря, 2022
China

Land expropriation has always been a hot spot of social conflicts. The land expropriation policy of Merging Villages and Living Together (MVLT) in rural areas has intensified conflicts due to insufficient financial compensation and “demolishing old houses before building new ones”.

Scrutinizing Urbanization in Kathmandu Using Google Earth Engine Together with Proximity-Based Scenario Modelling

Peer-reviewed publication
декабря, 2022
Nepal

‘Urbanization’ refers to the expansion of built-up areas caused by several factors. This study focuses on the urbanization process in Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. Supervised classification was conducted in Google Earth Engine by using Landsat data for years 2001, 2011 and 2021. The random forest classifier with 250 trees was used for classification to generate land-cover map. A land-cover map of 2021 was used as base map in the InVEST tool for scenario modelling.

Insights into the Effects of Study Area Size and Soil Sampling Density in the Prediction of Soil Organic Carbon by Vis-NIR Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy in Two Forest Areas

Peer-reviewed publication
декабря, 2022
Italy

Sustainable forest land management requires measuring and monitoring soil organic carbon. Visible and near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (Vis-NIR, 350–2500 nm), although it has become an important method for predicting soil organic carbon (SOC), requires further studies and methods of analysis to realize its full potential. This study aimed to determine if the size of the study area and soil sampling density may affect the performance of Vis-NIR diffuse reflectance spectroscopy in the prediction of soil organic carbon.

Land Use and Landscape Characteristics Are Associated with Core Forest Patches in Ghana

Peer-reviewed publication
декабря, 2022
Ghana

Land uses and terrain characteristics would likely influence the types and spatial arrangements of forest patches, and generally, forest fragmentation. Whereas prior research has focused mainly on direct land use-induced forest fragmentation, this study models the relationship between the spatial distribution of core forest patches, land uses, and terrain variables.
