Dynamics of land-use and land-cover change in Freetown, Sierra Leone and its effects on urban and peri-urban agriculture – a remote sensing approach

Journal Articles & Books
декабря, 2011
Sierra Leone

This paper presents findings of a land-use and land-cover (LULC) change mapping exercise conducted in Freetown, Sierra Leone. Nine LULC classes were mapped from multi-temporal Landsat data of 1974, 1986 and 2000. Special attention was given to the growth or otherwise of agricultural land in relation to other LULC classes. Conversion of one land-use/-cover type to the other was identified, and its effects discussed. Major conversions occurred between agricultural lands, grasslands, evergreen forest, built-up areas and barren land.

Farm and Village Forest Use Practice in Ekiti State: Analysis of Government Policy and Tenure Issues

Journal Articles & Books
декабря, 2011
Nigeria

This study analyzed the influence of government policy and tenure issues on farm and village forest use practices in Ekiti State, Nigeria. Three rural communities that were still far from urban influence were selected from each of the 16 local government areas of the state. In each community, 20 household heads were selected and interviewed with the aid of a semi-structured matrix. The interviews aimed at the determination of respondents' socioeconomic status, awareness and belief in the effectiveness or otherwise of the forest laws and regulations, land use, tenure and property rights.

Modern perspectives for plant sociology: The case of ecological land classification and the ecoregions of Italy

Journal Articles & Books
декабря, 2011
Italy

In this article, we discuss the relationships between plant sociology and ecology and highlight the potential of plant sociology for ecological modelling and environmental assessment. The classification criteria for plant communities (characteristic combination of species, specific relationships with the physical environment, particular chorological and dynamical features) assign strong indicator value to phytosociological units.

ICESat laser full waveform analysis for the classification of land cover types over the cryosphere

Journal Articles & Books
декабря, 2011
Greenland
Antarctica

In this study, a terrain classification algorithm is presented that was derived from various properties of the returned full waveform signals collected from the Ice, Cloud and land elevation Satellite (ICESat) mission. Such an algorithm would be beneficial for current and future studies of the cryosphere, particularly Greenland and Antarctica, by helping to identify changes in the large scale surface properties over time. The algorithm developed was validated over a test region in the Dry Valleys of Antarctica, where the terrain is well known and regularly monitored.

Lake Superior: Nearshore variability and a landscape driver concept

Journal Articles & Books
декабря, 2011

Spatial variation is well known to exist in water quality parameters of the Great Lakes nearshore; however, strong patterns for extended reaches also have been observed and found to be robust across seasonal time frames. Less is known about robustness of inter-annual variation within parameters for water quality in the nearshore.
