How do policy options modify landscape amenities? An assessment approach based on public expressed preferences

Journal Articles & Books
декабря, 2013
Portugal
France

Facing the changes in the agricultural sector as well as new growing demands from society in relation to the European countryside, new questions emerge as to the management of the agricultural landscapes. The multiple combination of production with the support of multiple functions is a challenge for present day management. Tools are needed that make it possible to assess how a certain landscape can support in particular cultural and amenity functions, those that directly depend on the public preferences.

Sugar-ethanol-electricity co-generation in Hawai’i: An application of linear programming (LP) for optimizing strategies

Journal Articles & Books
декабря, 2013

This research develops a linear programming (LP) model to assess various options for sugar and biofuel production from sugarcane and other feedstock in Hawaii. More specifically, the study focuses on finding optimal sugar and biomass feedstock that would maximize producer profits in the production of sugar, ethanol and electricity. Feedstock included in the model were sugarcane, banagrass, energy cane and sweet sorghum. Given available land resources for growing energy crops on the island of Maui, four land resource scenarios were considered.

Windtane contour map of the state of Texas

Journal Articles & Books
декабря, 2013

With the expansion of wind energy development, there is a need to update wind data periodically for the state of Texas for developers and landowners to see if their properties could support wind turbines. This study presents an updated wind power map and a Windtane contour map of the state of Texas. The Windtane map shows the height above ground level needed to reach a baseline wind power level of 350 W/m².

Connotative land degradation mapping: A knowledge-based approach to land degradation assessment

Journal Articles & Books
декабря, 2013
Mexico

Land degradation mapping is a problem-solving task that aims to provide information for allocating budgets and materials to counter the deterioration of land resources. Typically, it entails the implementation of a set of indicators in a GIS to appraise the severity of land degradation across a territory. Nevertheless, the selection of these indicators has proved to be challenging in practice and often this selection reflects one particular and thus limited perspective of land degradation.

Impacts of Changing Climate and Climate Variability on Seed Production and Seed Industry

Southern Asia

Agriculture is extremely sensitive to climate and weather conditions. The resilience of our crop production systems to changes in climate can be enhanced by improved understanding impacts and responses of crops to changing climates. Several countries in Asia and Africa are at the risk of losing about 280 million tons of potential cereal production as a result of climate change factor, particularly increasing temperatures and prolonged dry periods.
