The Cities Alliance is a global partnership for urban poverty reduction and the promotion of the role of cities in sustainable development.

What does the Cities Alliance do?
The Cities Alliance’s overall strategic objectives are to support cities in providing effective local government, an active citizenship and an economy characterised by both public and private investment. The Cities Alliance seeks to realise this goal by:
- Developing and/or enhancing national policy frameworks to address urban development needs
- Developing and implementing local inclusive strategies and plans
- Strengthening the capacity of cities to provide improved services to the urban poor
- Developing mechanisms to engage citizens in city or urban governance

The purpose of the Sofia City Strategy
(SCS) is to combat poverty and provide the basis for
sustainable development of the local economy and the welfare
of city residents. SCS is driven by the need to reevaluate
the increased role of Bulgarian local authorities that
resulted from the country's transition from socialism
to a market economy. Launching a long-term strategy for
Sofia will provide the municipality with an opportunity to

The financial and economic crisis that
started in the United States has finally impacted all urban
communities and investment financing systems around the
world. Local governments grappling with the crisis face a
number of constraints which, though disparate in nature,
have a cumulative effect. This phenomenon has created a
number of extremely difficult situations. In general terms,
the consequences of the crisis can be felt on four levels:

Com seu processo de urbanização virtualmente concluído, muitas cidades latino-americanas têm respondido cada vez mais ao desafio de superar o legado de décadas de exclusão social. No Brasil, anos de pressão dos movimentos sociais colocaram a questão do acesso  terra urbana e a igualdade social no topo da lista das agendas política e de desenvolvimento. Confrontado com as diferenças sociais criadas por uma das sociedades mais desiguais do mundo, a resposta do Brasil foi a de mudar a Constituição a fim de promover uma reforma fundamental de longo prazo na din¢mica urbana.
