The FAO Legal Office provides in-house counsel in accordance with the Basic Texts of the Organization, gives legal advisory services to FAO members, assists in the formulation of treaties on food and agriculture, for which the Director-General acts as Depositary, publishes legal studies and maintains a database (FAOLEX) of national legislation and international agreements concerning food and agriculture (including fisheries, forestry and water).

Westbank First Nation Self-Government Agreement between Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada and Westbank First Nation.

The purpose of this Agreement is to implement aspects of the inherent right of self-government by Westbank First Nation on Westbank Lands based on the recognition that the inherent right of self-government is an existing aboriginal right within section 35 of the Constitution Act, 1982. The Agreement covers items such as the First Nation’s powers of government and membership, financial and resource management, agriculture, environmental protection, culture and language, education, and health services.

Saskatchewan Treaty Land Entitlement Framework Agreement.

A Framework Agreement between the government of Canada, of Saskatchewan and first nations. In particular, the Agreement, signed on 22 September 1992, provides the 25 signatory First Nations with $440 million over 12 years to purchase land, mineral rights and improvements, which include buildings and structures affixed to the land. First Nations are entitled to purchase federal, provincial or private land anywhere in Saskatchewan.

The present Act establishes four institutions: the First Nations Tax Commission (FNTC), the First Nations Finance Authority (FNFA), the First Nations Financial Management Board (FNFMB) and the First Nations Statistical Institute.By opting to be added to the Schedule of the present Act, First Nations are able to access various tools and services offered by these institutions.

Labrador Inuit Land Claims Agreement Act (S.C. 2005, c. 27).

The present Act lays down provisions relating to the ratification of the Labrador Iniut Land Claims Agreement. In particular, section 5 establishes that the Agreement is approved, given effect and declared valid and has the force of law. The text consists of 15 sections.
