Global Affairs Canada (GAC; French: Affaires mondiales Canada, or AMC) (legal name: Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development) is the department in the Government of Canada that manages Canada's diplomatic and consular relations, to encourage the country's international trade, and to lead Canada's international development and humanitarian assistance. It is also responsible for maintaining Canadian government offices abroad with diplomatic and consular status on behalf of all government departments.
The department has undergone numerous name changes and re-organizations in recent years. Within the past decade, it has been known as Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada and Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada.

General
The overall aim is to improve household livelihood for rural communities in a set of communities in the north-Ethiopian Tigray region, by supporting community-based woodland restoration and woodland ecosystem services development. The major objectives are (i) to boost woodland ecosystem restoration on large and highly degraded areas by management of exclosures and forest relicts; (ii) to improve resilience to land degradation and store carbon in the restored woodlands; (iii) to support ecosystem services development (a.o. increased availability of fodder, firewood provision and grassy biomass; erosion reduction; honey and/or frankincense production). The interventions will lead to the following specific (quantifiable) targets: (1) Increased area of better managed community woodlands; (2) Increased inclusive and participatory established woodland area with increased water infiltration, soil moisture and reactivation of springs1, less land degradation (desertification) activity and water runoff – which will create resilience against the effects of recurrent droughts; (3) A social shift towards stable feeding, as fodder can be derived from grass harvested from the exclosure; and (4) Sequestration of carbon, mainly through increases in above- and belowground biomass.

Le programme vise (Outcome) au développement des opportunités économiques des femmes rurales par un renforcement de leur pouvoir d’agir dans la filière laitière locale et la gouvernance foncière. Il s’appuie pour y parvenir sur l’atteinte de 5 résultats complémentaires qui opérationnalise la théorie de changement: (1) les organisations paysannes et deux ONG de soutien travaillent à réduire les inégalités de genre à l’interne, dans leurs programmes et via leurs revendications politiques, (2) les agriculteurs familiaux et en particulier les femmes rurales actives dans la chaîne de valeur « lait local » développent leurs activités économiques et des pratiques durables (production, transformation, commercialisation), (3) les agriculteurs familiaux des communes d’intervention, et principalement les femmes, renforcent la compréhension de leur droit à l’accès sécurisé à la terre, et des mécanismes à leurs dispositions pour le faire respecter,(4) les organisations partenaires ont développé un travail d’influence, en réseaux avec d’autres organisations de la société civile (plaidoyer/campagne), envers les décideurs et le secteur privé à différents niveaux (local, national et régional), et (5) les partenaires renforcent leur fonctionnement et développent leur capacité. L’intervention implique directement 6 partenaires, ONG et organisations paysannes au niveau local, national et régional ouest africain. Trois parties prenantes concourent aussi directement à l’intervention.

Central America is one of the most dangerous regions in the world in which to defend human rights, and human rights defenders working in Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua face risks to their physical and psychological security and well-being. Land rights and environmental defenders are es-pecially at risk, and form a large share of HRD casualties in the region. This project will therefore protect land rights and environ-mental defenders as they carry out their dangerous work, and will train them in the essential skills they need for their work, such as security and lobbying. Specific objectives (outcomes) of the project are: 1. The resilience and security is enhanced of land and envi-ronmental (W)HRDs from Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicara-gua through the protection and moral support provided through international accompaniment and observation. 2. Land and environmental (W)HRDs from Guatemala, Hondu-ras and Nicaragua develop their capacity to effectively carry out risk analysis and implement security plans and proce-dures; create and implement national and international advo-cacy strategies; and increase their resilience through direct workshops and participation in exchange spaces with other (W)HRDs from the country/region. 3. Authorities in Guatemala, Honduras and Costa Rica (Nicara-gua) are reminded of their international human rights obliga-tions regarding the security and protection of (W)HRDs, and the specific needs of land and environmental rights defend-ers, and take action to support and protect them.
PROG2017-2021-DGD: Sustainable and climate-smart land use for ecosystem conservation by farmers
General
The overall aim is to improve the livelihoods of rural communities in Western Uganda, by promoting and facilitating community-based forest management (UG1) and sustainable and climate-smart land use practices (agro-forestry) (UG2). We focus on two districts: Karabole and Hoima, in western Uganda. In both specific objectives the interventions focus on three aspects: (1) capacity building courses of community promotors and staff of farmers associations in community forestry and sustainable agriculture (including women and youth particularly) ; (2) field actions in terms of participatory forest management and agro-forestry (with special attention for water and soil conservation); (3) promotion of good practices by authorities and institutions. After five years, the farmers associations with which we work will be able to gain a triple win out of their natural capital: socio-economic advantages, climate and biodiversity. This way they can break the vicious circle of land degradation and poverty that threatens rural communities in Uganda and reduce their vulnerability for climate change
