Addressing Climate Change at the State and Local Level: Using Land Use Controls to Reduce Automobile Emissions

Peer-reviewed publication
Diciembre, 2009
United States of America

Automobiles are a major source of CO2 emissions. Because there is no immediate technological fix to reduce these emissions, the most promising current strategy is to promote less automobile use. In the United States, this is difficult because federal programs such as the interstate highway system and local land use planning and regulation have encouraged suburban sprawl. In 2006, the state of California passed legislation to roll back greenhouse emissions to 1990 levels by 2020. This legislation did not link the roll back target with land use policies.

From government to governance in forest planning? Lessons from the case of the British Columbia Great Bear Rainforest initiative

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2009

Much has been written about a supposed shift 'from government to governance' in many policy areas, including forest policy. However, the idea remains very much at the level of hypothesis as few empirical studies have confirmed the transition. Part of the problem is the multi-dimensional character of governance itself, which includes traditional 'government' as one of many possible governance modes.

Kafkasör Forest Area which is close to the Artvin (Turkey) city center is an important recreational area. 'Kafkasör Festival' is arranged in July every year. However, the area is intensively used during the festivals, and irregular usage and lack of equipment damage the area. Because of the intensity of festival activities, the area can not respond the needs and the determined visitor necessities don't be used in planning. Hence, redefining the visitor demand should be determined.

Watershed land use and aquatic ecosystem response: Ecohydrologic approach to conservation policy

Journal Articles & Books
Diciembre, 2009

Land use activities change the natural functions of a watershed impacting the flow of water and water quality, and impair aquatic ecosystems. Optimal allocation of land use depends on attributes related to terrestrial and aquatic environments. A dynamic model that links land use, overland flow, suspended sediment, and an aquatic species is used to evaluate alternate land use policies. The dwarf wedge mussel that is classified as endangered in the region is used as an indicator species of aquatic health in a watershed in Massachusetts.

The need to develop approaches for risk-based management of soil contamination, as well as the integration of the assessment of the human health risk (HHR) due to the soil contamination in the urban planning procedures has been the subject of recent attention of scientific literature and policy makers. The spatial analysis of environmental data offers multiple advantages for studying soil contamination and HHR assessment, facilitating the decision making process.
