This project examined the linkages between population and demand for food and water. Cambodia, in general, and Pursat Province in particular, have a complex and interesting mosaic of demographic attributes and development issues. The Tonle Sap basin and Pursat catchment possess the country’s largest potential water resources.

This working paper examines population growth in Pursat and its potential impact on food demand and land and water resources in a systematic and integrated manner. The main purpose of the paper is to kick-start a policy debate on population dynamics and food and water security in Pursat. The paper provides background information, observations and empirical analysis of resource demand (real or perceived) associated with population growth and policy decisions related to food and water security.

The 2013 Global Hunger Index (GHI) report-the eighth in an annual series- presents a multidimensional measure of national, regional, and global hunger. It shows that the world has made some progress in reducing hunger since 1990, but still has far to go. The 2013 GHI report focuses on resilience in theory and in practice. The relief and development communities have long struggled to understand why some people fare better than others when confronting stresses or shocks.

Der Bericht zum Welthunger-Index 2013 – der achte in einer jährlich erscheinenden Serie – stellt die Entwicklung des weltweiten, regionalen und nationalen Hungers mittels eines mehrdimensionalen Indexwertes dar. Er zeigt, dass die Weltgemeinschaft bei der Bekämpfung des Hungers seit 1990 gewisse Fortschritte gemacht hat, dass aber noch viel zu tun ist.

Study of the effects of land use on water and soil quality change at Kuan Kreng peatlands was divided in 3 parts: water quality, soil quality, and the effects of water and soil quality to utility of people in Kuan Kreng peatlands. The result of the studies found that water quality in Kuan Kreng peatlands had pH, temperature, dissolve oxygen, BOD, and ammonia-nitrogen as between 2.00-5.78, 25.1-28.9 deg C, 8.4-87.0 NTU, 1.1-5.4 mg/l, 2.5-31.1 mg/l and 0.0252-0.1939 mg/l, respectively. While highest phosphate-phosphorus was 0.0752 mg/l and lowest could not be detected.

Coping with water scarcity and growing competition for water among different sectors requires proper water management strategies and decision processes. A prerequisite is a clear understanding of the basin hydrological processes, manageable and unmanageable water flows, the interaction with land use and opportunities to mitigate the negative effects and increase the benefits of water depletion on society. Currently, water professionals do not have a common framework that links depletion to user groups of water and their benefits.
