With the purpose of bringing new ideas to bear on the subject of institutional support to forest policy implementation, a Consultation sponsored by FAO and the Swedish International Development Authority (SIDA) was held at FAO Headquarters in Rome from 2 to 11 February 1983. Twenty-nine participants attended In their individual capacities, drawn from 24 countries of Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and North America and from a very wide spectrum of disciplines. This issue of Unasylva presents a selection of the papers discussed at the Consultation.

A fin de recoger nuevas ideas relativas al tema del respaldo institucional a la aplicacin de la poltica forestal, se celebr una Consulta de Expertos sobre Administracin Forestal para el Desarrollo patrocinada por la FAO y la Oficina Central Sueca para la Ayuda Internacional (SIDA) en la sede de la FAO, en Roma, del 2 al 11 de febrero de 1983. Asistieron a titulo personal veintinueve expertos de una amplia gama de disciplinas provenientes de 24 pases de Africa, Asia, Europa, Amrica Latina y Amrica del Norte. This Act makes provisions for the alienation of private (custom) land and the use of public land by custom users, the development of public land and various other matters relative to land titles, use and management.The Act consists of 24 sections divided into 13 Parts: Interpretation (1); Encumbrances (2); Alienated Land (3); Negotiations and Agreements Relating to Custom Land (4); Management of Land (5); Public Land (6); Compensation (6a); Registered Leases (7); Rights of Entry (8); Land Corporations (9); Roads (10); Use of Force and Damage (11); Regulations and Offences (12).The Minister

This Law consisting of 6 articles specifies how many hectares of land it is possible to own, divided by land types as follows (i) irrigated land; (ii) rain-fed areas with fruit trees; and (iii) rain-fed land. The Law also considers cases in which the indicated limit can be exceeded.

Section 4 of the above-mentioned Act establishes a body corporate to be known as the Wakamow Valley Authority.

Explores the relationship between fertility and socioeconomic and demographic variables, as well as the determinants of the acceptance of family planning in rural Thailand. Includes a bibliography.

Census, surveys and research studies conventionally identify three tenure classes -owner-operators, part-tenants and tenants - in Bangladesh. Some sources identify two more classes-part-operators and absentee owners. Conceptual deficiencies of these 3 or 5 type tenure classifications are discussed and alternative conceptual framework is suggested for identifying and classifying tenure relationship. Applying the suggested framework, 17 different tenure relations were identified in a sample of 385 farms.

This special issue of Unasylva has two main objectives. It brings to our readers an edited selection of some of the position papers of the important 4th Session of the FAO Committee on Forestry Development in the Tropics and, in doing, this, it emphasizes FAO's principal concern in the field of forestry: how to make the best and wisest use of man's least understood ecological formation, the moist tropical forest.

This Act provides that any land upon which an agricultural labourer, an artisan or a fisherman has a dwelling house which is complete in itself and not shared in common with any person other than a person belonging to the same family shall be in the ownership of such an agricultural labourer, an artisan or a fisherman. The Act states that the State government shall pay a price to the former owner, acquire such land and, thereafter, transfer the same to the agricultural labourer, artisan or fisherman who owns the homestead on the land.
