Microbial resistance and resilience to drought and rewetting modulate soil N2O emissions with different fertilizers

Diciembre, 2023
Global

Future climate models indicate an enhanced severity of regional drought and frequent rewetting events, which may cause cascading impacts on soil nitrogen cycle and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions, but the underlying microbial mechanism remains largely unknown. Here we report an incubation study that examined the impacts of soil moisture status and nitrification inhibitor (DCD) on the N2O-producers and N2O-reducers following the application of urea and composted swine manure in an acid soil.

Farmers on the front line: Perceptions, practices and discrepancies from the Aral Sea's Karakalpakstan and Khorezm regions

Diciembre, 2023
Global

Undesirable changes in surface water and groundwater resources and land quality for biophysical and institutional reasons will further endanger the livelihoods of people in Central Asia. The farmers' understanding of these problems and the adaptation and solution strategies they opt for are the critical variables in devising relevant policies. Our findings captured significant disparities between farmer-perceived water shortages and officially documented water availability, as well as soil salinity discrepancies.

Presentations for Introducing the new Women’s Empowerment Metric for National Statistical Systems (WEMNS)

Diciembre, 2023
Global

The new Women’s Empowerment Metric for National Statistical Systems (WEMNS) is a streamlined tool for measuring women’s empowerment, intended for use in large-scale, multitopic surveys conducted by national statistical systems. WEMNS is designed to measure empowerment in households with all types of livelihoods, in both urban and rural areas, complementing the Women’s Empowerment in Agriculture Index (WEAI), which focuses on agricultural households.

Production vulnerability to wheat blast disease under climate change

Diciembre, 2023
Global

Wheat blast is a devastating disease caused by the fungal pathogen Magnaporthe oryzae pathotype Triticum that has spread to both neighbouring and distant countries following its emergence in Brazil in the 1980s. Under climate change conditions, wheat blast is predicted to spread primarily in tropical regions. Here we coupled a wheat crop simulation model with a newly developed wheat blast model, to provide quantitative global estimates of wheat blast vulnerability under current and future climates.

Executive summaries country profiles on food loss and waste - China, Colombia, Kenya and Vietnam

Diciembre, 2023

In this document, we present an executive summary condensing the extensive Food Loss and Waste (FLW) country studies conducted by WFBR from 2022 to 2024, focusing on China, Colombia, Kenya, and Vietnam. Our synthesis of hotspot food products in these countries aims to guide the implementation of measures to reduce FLW. The quantifiable sums vary by product and chain stage. Concentrating efforts on food products and chain stages that significantly contribute to the earlier mentioned parameters can significantly enhance resource use efficiency.

Satellite-based Tracking of Agricultural Adaptation Progress in Sub-Saharan Africa

Diciembre, 2023
Global

Lack of systematic tools and approaches for measuring climate change adaptation limits the measurement of progress toward the adaptation goals of the Paris Agreement. To this end, we piloted a new approach, the Biomass Climate Adaptation Index (Biomass CAI), for measuring agricultural adaptation progress in Ethiopia across multiple scales using satellite remote sensing data. The Biomass CAI can monitor agri-biomass productivity associated with adaptation interventions remotely and facilitate more tailored precision adaptation.
