FAO opened the Nigeria Representation Office in 1978, and has since provided unabated support to the country in the formulation and implementation of policies, strategies, programmes and projects in food, agriculture and natural resources.
Despite differences in pace and sequencing of adjustment programmes, economic liberalization has had far-reaching effects on the structure and the relative importance of actors involved in the supply and distribution of food in most African cities.
The global economic cost of food wastage, based on 2009 producer prices, is 750 billion USD, approximately the 2011 GDP of Turkey or Switzerland. The lost grain in sub-Saharan Africa only could meet the minimum annual food requirement of 48 million people.
