Presents findings and proposals of a team which studied the pastoral zone of Niger to forumlate a development programme, describing the existing production systems and constraints related to range resources, nutrition, water points and diseases.

Malnutrition rates among children 0-36 months and women of reproductive age in Nigeria are high and vary significantly across rural-urban locations, geopolitical regions, and agroecological zones, constituting a significant public health challenge. Using National Demographic Health Survey (NDHS) 2003 data, we sought to understand better what the determinants of child and maternal nutrition are and whether they differ significantly in terms of their nature, levels, and effects across these domains.

Lack of statistical data constitutes the main constraint to assess the effects of land use change in developing countries like Guinea. Here we examine the role of land use change in improving the livelihood of local mangrove rice farmers in the Guinean coastal zone based on both satellite and field survey data. We investigated land use change dynamics using spatial analysis and field survey data for the Dubreka prefecture, Guinea, where statistics and maps are not sufficiently available.
