Esse Caderno Pólis é fruto do projeto “Capacitação de agentes locais: instrumentos didáticos para o ensino da regulação urbanística” desenvolvido pelo Instituto Pólis e apoiado pelo Lincoln Institute of Land Policy. Este projeto parte do reconhecimento de que foi cumprida uma primeira etapa após a aprovação do Estatuto da Cidade, em 2001: a de construção de uma rede e disseminação por todo o território nacional de um grau básico de conhecimento a respeito do Estatuto da Cidade.

Due to recurring droughts and severe overgrazing, Jordan’s dry rangelands are exceptionally prone to degradation. Establishing both restoration and sustainable rangeland management practices are crucial to reverse the negative impacts on the ecosystem. However, a primary estimate of the native baseline’s water and sediment fluxes is essential to properly target a sustainable transition from degraded to a potentially revegetated landscape status.

The residents of the Ganges and Mekong River deltas face serious challenges from rising sea levels, saltwater intrusion, pollution from upstream sources, growing populations, and infrastructure that no longer works as planned. In both deltas, scientists working for nearly two decades with communities, local governments and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) have demonstrated the potential to overcome these challenges and substantially improve people’s livelihoods.

This paper discusses the history of irrigation development and related land allocation in the Bagré area in the South of Burkina Faso. It specifically analyses current processes at play as part of the recent Bagré Growth Pole Project implemented by the government of Burkina Faso with support of the World Bank. The paper stresses the efforts made to put in place a fair and equitable compensation mechanism for the people being affected by the extension of the irrigated area downstream of the Bagré dam.
