Ranching motivations in 2 Colorado counties

Journal Articles & Books
december, 2001

The objectives of this Colorado study were to assess primary reasons ranchers choose to stay or sell the ranch, compare the motivations for ranching between a traditional agriculturally based county and a rapidly developing county, and assess whether factors such as length of tenure, fiscal dependency on ranching, and dependency on public lands play roles in decisions to sell. Personal interviews were conducted with 37 ranchers. While land use conversion occurs for a wide variety of reasons, lack of heirs and detrimental public policy were important reasons given for selling ranches.

Modeling Urban Growth Effects on Surface Runoff with the Integration of Remote Sensing and GIS

Journal Articles & Books
december, 2001
China

A methodology is developed to relate urban growth studies to distributed hydrological modeling using an integrated approach of remote sensing and GIS. This linkage is possible because both studies share land-use and land-cover data. Landsat Thematic Mapper data are utilized to detect urban land-cover changes. GIS analyses are then conducted to examine the changing spatial patterns of urban growth. The integration of remote sensing and GIS is applied to automate the estimation of surface runoff based on the Soil Conservation Service model.

Who's afraid of red, green and blue?; toets van de Vijfde Nota Ruimtelijke Ordening op ecologische effecten

Reports & Research
december, 2001
Netherlands

In every region of the world, landscapes are being transformed. Rural people are migrating to urban centres in search of economic and social opportunities while city dwellers are becoming interested in producing their own food and moving outside the centres to be able to appreciate nature. These changes in lifestyles have implications for the food system and nutritional status of populations.

From illegality to legality: Illegal urban development and the transformation of urban property rights in Lesotho

Conference Papers & Reports
april, 2001
Lesotho

This paper draws on research on the enforcement of the Land Act of 1979 in Lesotho. It seeks to show that illegal settlements occur under the shadow of formal state rules, from which social actors borrow selectively and in opportunistic ways to acquire urban property rights. This is possible because of inconsistencies and contradictions in state rules and enforcement methods.

Achieving urban food and nutrition security in the developing world

Journal Articles & Books
december, 2000

The trend is inescapable: more and more people in the developing world are living in the cities. By 2020, the number of people living in developing countries will grow from 4.9 billion to 6.8 billion. Ninety percent of this increase will be in rapidly expanding cities and towns. More than half the population of Africa and Asia will live in urban areas by 2020. More than three-quarters of Latin Americans already do.

LOCATIONAL EFFECTS OF URBANIZATION ON AGRICULTURE IN SOUTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA

Conference Papers & Reports
december, 2000
United States of America

Most agricultural output in the northeastern United States comes from counties that have experienced significant development. A mail survey, with 300 responses, was conducted in southeastern Pennsylvania to determine farmer adaptation to urbanization in this region. Despite development, traditional agriculture still predominates. Changes in land use were examined using multinomial logit models.
