How to enhance the sustainability and inclusiveness of smallholder aquaculture production systems in Zambia?

december, 2021
Zambia

Fish is a key source of income, food, and nutrition in Zambia, although unlike in the past, capture fisheries no longer meet the national demand for fish. Supply shortfalls created an opportunity to develop the aquaculture sector in Zambia, which is now one of the largest producers of farmed fish (Tilapia spp.) on the continent. In its present form, the aquaculture sector exhibits a dichotomy.

Community Based Resource Management Training Package

Solomon Islands

In the Solomon Islands, more than 80% of the population are rural dwellers who commonly build
livelihoods from subsistence agriculture and fisheries. Indigenous people own more than 80% of the
land including the shorelines. Recognizing this customary land tenure, the Solomon Islands Government

Reflections on a decade of innovative research-for-development

december, 2021
Global

This synthesis brief captures insights and lessons from the implementation of the CGIAR Research Program on Water, Land and Ecosystems (WLE) over the past decade. By assessing the program’s performance, thematic scope and its management, governance and structure, as well as the ways in which the program has monitored and communicated its research outputs, this brief aims to consolidate WLE’s experiences and inform the transition to One CGIAR and the
development of future research-for-development initiatives.

Food systems science for peace and security: Is research for development key for achieving systematic change?

december, 2021
Global

This paper uses CGIAR research as an example to demonstrate the potential of food systems science to contribute to conflict prevention and peacebuilding. Conflict often arises through a complex process whose triggers and consequences are closely interconnected in feedback loops and linked to climate variability, environmental degradation and food insecurity. Conflicts are often approached from asymptomatic rather than a holistic perspective. We (i) review the literature on climate security to identify conflict pathways and related drivers.

Carbon footprints of forest degradation and deforestation by “Basic-Needs Populations”: A review

december, 2021
Global

Forest conversion caused by subsistence or “basic needs populations” is difficult to track and measure. As the dynamics of these populations change over time, their carbon footprint impacts on natural resources also change. To reduce their potential negative impacts on forest resources, it is critical to understand what underlying causes influence their livelihoods practices. A systematic review was conducted to search for common basic needs livelihoods that result in forest loss and degradation, and thus in carbon footprint changes.

Gender differences in climate-smart adaptation practices amongst bean-producing farmers in Malawi: The case of Linthipe Extension Planning Area

december, 2021
Malawi

Agriculture is amongst the vulnerable sectors to climate change and its associated impacts. Most women are more vulnerable to the impacts of climate change than men. Climate Smart Agriculture ensures increased productivity thereby enabling food security, income security and wealth creation amongst the farming households. A study was carried out to understand the gender differences in access and use of climate-smart agriculture, challenges and solutions that men and women farmers use to adapt to climate change.
