What Are Scenarios Telling Us About Developing Climate-Resilient Pathways in the Southern African Region?

december, 2019
Netherlands

Over the past 10 years, there have been a myriad of foresight exercises and scenarios developed that are relevant to consider in the context of building climate-resilient pathways of development in the SADC region. These scenarios consider different pathways for developing climate-resilient food and agricultural systems relevant for the region. However, not all the scenarios ar e developed for the r egion; most are either at SSA or country level, with a few at regional level, and several at global level.

CRP 2020 Reviews: Water, Land and Ecosystems

december, 2019
Global

In 2020 the CGIAR CAS Secretariat is conducting independent reviews of the 12 CGIAR Research Programs (CRPs), including this one of WLE. The reviews will provide information on quality of science and effectiveness in each CRP. This review covers the Phase II years of 2017 through 2019, with a view to identifying lessons for future research modalities.

Participatory climate risk mapping: Building local adaptation capacities. A case from Ivisan , Capiz , Philippines

december, 2019
Philippines

The report discussed how the local government unit in Ivisan municipality, Capiz, Philippines coped with, mitigated, and prepared for climate related risks in the livelihood and agri fisheries sector. The goal of the research was to produce Climate Related Risk Maps and Adaptation Plans in agriculture (Climate Smart MAP/CS MAP) for the 15 villages of Ivisan. The maps will assist in decision making and planning for risks, in normal and severe years, on a long term basis.

Identification of divergent isolates of Banana Mild Mosaic Virus and development of a new diagnostic primer to improve detection

december, 2019
Global

This study aims to describe the identification and genome sequencing of two isolates of Banana Mild Mosaic Virus, and, based on the virus sequences available in GenBank, to design and test a new diagnostic primer for a routine indexing use.

Community seed banks as seed producers: Cases from India, Nepal, Uganda and Zimbabwe

december, 2019

Community-based seed producers are a relatively under-researched and under-documented category of seed producers, but have the potential to cater to the diverse seed needs and interests of smallholder farmers. This working paper presents a number of such community-seed producers, with a focus on community seed banks.

Assessment of adoption and impact of management innovations in agriculture carbon project in East Africa

december, 2019
Netherlands

This working paper presents results of an impact assessment of management innovations that were introduced in agricultural carbon projects in East Africa. We evaluated the effect of project design, management, and monitoring transfer of responsibilities to local communities on the performance of agricultural carbon projects. The assessment included the economic, social, and environmental impacts of the projects on the smallholder farmers.

How is forest landscape restoration being Implemented in Burkina Faso? Overview of ongoing initiatives

december, 2019
Global

Land degradation affects a significant portion of the Earth’s ice-free land area and several countries have embraced the challenge of restoring large parts of their degraded lands. Success in these efforts depends on various factors, including the amount of resources invested, the technical capacity available and the degree of involvement of stakeholders. Burkina Faso has committed to restoring 5 Mha of degraded land by 2030.

Creating climate-smart multi-functional landscapes through integrated soil, land and water management practices and contextualized agroadvisory services at different scales in Ethiopia

december, 2019
Ethiopia

Experiences show that integrating restoration efforts at landscape level need to be coupled with intensification efforts at farm/plot level to promote synergy and attain multiple benefits. The approaches followed in the creation of multifunctional landscapes are designed to enable achieving this goal. This report presents project activities and outputs related to approaches, implementation modalities and evidence generation exercises from ‘learning’ and upscaling sites.

Technical and environmental characterization of dual-purpose cattle farms and ways of improving production: A case study in Colombia

december, 2019
Colombia

There are few reports on dual-purpose cattle systems characterization in Latin America and Colombia based on
large datasets. This limits our understanding of their dynamics, and the establishment of public policies and
government programs to improve their productive performance, promotion and rural development. This study
aimed to characterize very small, small, medium, and large dual-purpose farms in Colombia from technical and
environmental perspectives. The data analysed were obtained from the Ganadería Colombiana Sostenible and the

Peacebuilding in times of COVID-19: risk-adapted strategies of cooperation and development projects

december, 2019
Global

National and international cooperation and development projects (CDP) are fundamental for peacebuilding. However, unforeseen global crises, like COVID-19, can endanger such projects, requiring rapid adaption. In Colombia, the coronavirus outbreak threatens to slow the implementation of peace-related projects, while simultaneously violence over control and ownership of land increases.

Occurrence of plant-parasitic nematodes on enset (Ensete ventricosum) in Ethiopia with focus on Pratylenchus goodeyi as a key species of the crop

december, 2019
Ethiopia

Enset (Ensete ventricosum) is an important starch staple crop, cultivated primarily in south and southwestern Ethiopia. Enset is the main crop of a sustainable indigenous African system that ensures food security in a country that is food deficient. Related to the banana family, enset is similarly affected by plant-parasitic nematodes. Plant-parasitic nematodes impose a huge constraint on agriculture. The distribution, population density and incidence of plant-parasitic nematodes of enset was determined during August 2018.
