Global impacts of surface ozone changes on crop yields and land use

Journal Articles & Books
maart, 2015

Exposure to surface ozone has detrimental impacts on vegetation and crop yields. In this study, we estimate ozone impacts on crop production and subsequent impacts on land use in the 2005-2050 period using results of the TM5 atmospheric chemistry and IMAGE integrated assessment model. For the crops represented in IMAGE, we compute relative yield losses based on published exposure-response functions.

Carbon Cycling, Climate Regulation, and Disturbances in Canadian Forests: Scientific Principles for Management

Peer-reviewed publication
maart, 2015
Canada

Canadian forests are often perceived as pristine and among the last remaining wilderness, but the majority of them are officially managed and undergo direct land use, mostly for wood harvest. This land use has modified their functions and properties, often inadvertently (e.g., age structure) but sometimes purposefully (e.g., fire suppression). Based on a review of the literature pertaining to carbon cycling, climate regulation, and disturbances from logging, fire, and insect outbreaks, we propose five scientific principles relevant for Canadian managed forests.

Soil and Water Conservation Strategies in Cape Verde (Cabo Verde in Portuguese) and Their Impacts on Livelihoods: An Overview from the Ribeira Seca Watershed

Peer-reviewed publication
maart, 2015
Cape Verde

Severe land degradation has strongly affected both people’s livelihood and the environment in Cape Verde (Cabo Verde in Portuguese), a natural resource poor country. Despite the enormous investment in soil and water conservation measures (SWC or SLM), which are visible throughout the landscape, and the recognition of their benefits, their biophysical and socioeconomic impacts have been poorly assessed and scientifically documented.

Integrating Forest Cover Change with Census Data: Drivers and Contexts from Bolivia and the Lao PDR

Peer-reviewed publication
maart, 2015
Laos
Bolivia

The aim of this paper is to explore possible links between forest cover change and characteristics of social-ecological systems at sub-national scale based mainly on census data. We assessed relationships between population density, poverty, ethnicity, accessibility and forest cover change during the last decade for four regions of Bolivia and the Lao PDR, combining a parcel-based with a cell-based approach.

Formalising land rights in developing countries. Moving from past controversies to future strategies

Reports & Research
maart, 2015
Africa

Covers why do we need to think about policies to formalise land rights in developing countries?; primarily a political issue; policies to formalise land rights are not a panacea; inclusive formalisation policies present considerable challenges. Shows that policies to formalise rights raise highly political issues and often contribute to exclusion.

Volunteer group activity types of the farmland restoration after flood disaster in the northern part of Kyushu in 2012 in Yame and Ukiha City

Japan

Many farmlands were destroyed by big flood disaster in 2012 that was occurred in Yame and Ukiha city, Fukuoka prefecture at northern Kyushu, Japan. In this paper, I described the case study that has been deployed the volunteer activities for farmland restoration after the flood disaster in the hilly and mountainous areas. The purpose of this study is to clarify the outline of the activities in three regions and to show the types of the volunteer groups of farmland restoration. Interview survey was conducted with each volunteer group's manager and collecting that materials.

Africa in the post-Kyoto climate governance framework: side event

Conference Papers & Reports
maart, 2015
Africa

Climate variability lies behind much of the prevailing poverty, food insecurity and weak economic growth in Africa today. Climate change will increase this variability; the severity and frequency of droughts, floods and storms will increase, leading to more water stress. The Conferences of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change have become important spaces for the continuing global effort to refine and strengthen the international collaborative and regulatory framework on climate change and to improve global climate governance.

An ecoHealth approach : prediction and prevention of emerging infectious diseases from wildlife : final technical report

Reports & Research
maart, 2015
Brazil
South America

Approximately 20% of novel emerging infectious diseases (EIDs) and 50% of emerging and re-emerging zoonotic diseases have been attributed to land-use change. It is a clear threat to global biodiversity and ecosystem services and a key driver of EIDs. The project investigates the mechanisms underlying disease emergence by assessing the impacts of land-use change, measured as forest fragmentation, on viral diversity and bat host assemblages.

South Africa

While the Committee was waiting for delegates from the Departments of Rural Development and Land Reform (DRDLR) and Environmental Affairs (DEA) to arrive, it had time to engage on other matters which were not on the agenda. Members were told the Committee had received a late invitation from the DRDLR to attend an indaba in Johannesburg on March 20. They agreed to seek more details on the event before deciding whether Members should attend. Minutes of the February 24 meeting were adopted without any corrections.
