Small-scale farming, gender relations and resource allocation: Barriers to adoption of nature-positive solutions in Western Kenya

december, 2022
Global

The agricultural sector is a key driver of climate change and biodiversity loss and is in urgent
need for transition. NATURE+, a large-scale CGIAR agricultural development initiative, aims
to support small-holder farmers in shifting agrifood systems to more sustainable pathways by
adopting nature-positive solutions. With gender equality at its core, it is crucial to enhance
women’s opportunities and to identify any barriers to the adoption of nature-positive practices.

Community voices on climate, peace and security: Kenya

december, 2022
Kenya

This study conducted a participatory appraisal of climate vulnerabilities and conflict risks three communities across Kenya: 1) members of the Yiaku Indigenous Peoples in the Mukogodo Forest region, located in Laikipia County; 2) members of the Endorois Indigenous Peoples in the Lake Bogoria Game Reserve region, located in Baringo County; and 3) members of the Banyala Indigenous Peoples at the shores of Lake Victoria, in Busia County. The effects of climate variability across Kenya are contributing to depleting the natural resource base on which many livelihoods rely.

Reactive assistance or proactive protection? Social protection and climate resilience in the Sahel region

december, 2022
Global

The Sahel region is at the forefront of climate change, with increasing temperatures and extreme weather events predicted to accelerate at a greater rate than the global average. Most of the region’s countries rank as highly vulnerable and least prepared to face climate change risks, as insecurity, rising food prices and weak national governance systems further exacerbate existing vulnerability of many communities.

Women’s Empowerment in Agrifood Governance (WEAGov) assessment framework: A pilot study in Nigeria

december, 2022
Nigeria

Women’s equal participation and leadership in political and public life can boost a country’s long-run economic growth, foster social inclusion, and help countries reach the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Beyond these important outcomes, women’s inclusion in public life is a basic human right: women deserve a role in making decisions, controlling resources, and shaping policies. Despite the importance of women’s voices and their empowerment in policy and decision-making processes, it is far easier to lament their absence than to define and measure them.

Climate Risk & Vulnerability (CR&V) assessment for climate services: Rice production and value chain - Mekong River Delta, Viet Nam

december, 2022
Vietnam

As part of the CGIAR Initiative on Asian Mega-Deltas, a scoping study was completed by the end of 2022 to prioritize key delta-oriented production systems and value chains in Viet Nam's Mekong River Delta (MRD) (Gonsalves et al., 2022). Rice, rice-shrimp, and fruit trees production systems and value chains were selected based on a set of criteria including production, economic and nutritional value, climate change and impact, and potential benefit of climate services with specific attention for the role of women and smallholders.

CGIAR Report Concerning Centers’ Implementation of their Article 15 Agreements: A submission to the Tenth Session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture

december, 2022
Global

This report provides an update on the status, as of December 31, 2022, of the plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA) collections maintained by the eleven CGIAR Centers that signed Article 15 agreements with the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Plant Treaty) in 2006.

The economywide impacts of increasing water security through policies on agricultural production: The case of rice and sugarcane in Pakistan

december, 2022
Pakistan

Increasing demand for water juxtaposed with shrinking supplies will require a transfer of water resources out of agriculture into the domestic, industrial, and ideally environmental sectors. To examine the potential of policies to facilitate a release of water from agriculture, this paper uses IFPRI’s Computable General Equilibrium Model with a water extension, CGE-W, to assess the impact of commodity taxes on two highly water consumptive crops, rice and sugarcane, on water consumption and the overall economy.

An Assessment of Inclusion in the Governance of Bangladesh’s Agri-Food System to Face Climate Crisis

december, 2022
Global

This exploratory study relied on secondary data review relating to inclusive governance in agri-food systems, as well as an analysis of Bangladesh’s contemporary agriculture, food systems, climate change, conservation, and natural resource management policies and interventions. Based on the literature review, key practices/initiatives were mapped against an analytical framework consisting of seven dimensions of inclusive governance, namely representation, participation, capacity and skills, accessibility, financial resources, knowledge system, and innovation.

Resilience in farm technical efficiency and enabling factors: Insights from panel farm enterprise surveys in Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan

december, 2022

Economic resilience within the agrifood system is becoming increasingly crucial for assuring sustainable development. This is particularly so in regions with volatile and fragile environments, including Central Asia. Evidence remains scarce regarding what factors can enhance the economic resilience of agents within the agrifood system, including the resilience of productivity and technical efficiency.
