La population du Sahara algérien continue, depuis plus d’un demi-siècle, à s’accroître plus rapidement que celle de l’Algérie du Nord. Plus d’un Algérien sur dix vit actuellement au Sahara, contre un sur quinze à la veille de l’Indépendance. Cette population est de plus en plus citadine et les villes importantes ne sont plus rares aujourd’hui au Sahara.

This article engages in a comprehensive examination of the intricate dynamics surrounding urban sprawl and land utilization within the peri-urban regions of significant Algerian municipalities, with a specific focus on the city of Oran. 

Employing a methodology rooted in social geography, this study deploys a trio of investigative approaches: documentary analysis, spatio-temporal scrutiny of peri-urban domains, and in-situ field investigations to shed light on the intricate intricacies of land ownership dynamics in the context of urban sprawl.

In the next 30 years, Africa’s population is expected to double, and the continent will be home to 2.5 billion people. Almost half of this population will be living in urban agglomerations. Metropolitan cities, such as Lagos, Nairobi, Dar es Salaam or Abidjan will host several tens of millions of urban dwellers. Peri-urban areas are most affected by the cities’ expansion and undergo important social, political and economic transformations.This Ifri briefing analyses how these changes translate into land governance, a key sector of urban development.

The driving mechanism of soil quality (SQ) has important implications for arable land protection, sustainable agricultural development and ecological environment conservation. This study builds a “perception–response” theoretical framework to investigate how farmers’ land use behavior may affect SQ from the temporal and spatial perspectives.

The recent decades have witnessed a significant increase in the population in peri-urban areas which led to a progressive transformation of peri-urban landscapes, and the reduced ability of agriculture to provide ecosystem services. In order to understand the complex relationships established in peri-urban areas between reference urban centre, urban services (US) and ecosystem services (ES), with particular attention to the landscape, a Discrete Choice Experiment (DCE) was carried out in the transitional peri-urban areas of six municipalities located near the city of Perugia (Italy).

À Madingou, la question de la gestion foncière se pose avec acuité, car le développement des espaces urbains empiète sur les terres dévolues à l’agriculture périurbaine. Ce phénomène reconnu par les autorités municipales et les populations est à la fois à l’origine de la croissance anarchique de la ville et au rétrécissement préoccupant des superficies agricoles périurbaines. L’objectif de cette étude est d’analyser l’impact de la gestion foncière sur l’agriculture périurbaine à Madingou. Elle est réalisée entre janvier et mars 2017.

Oran, deuxième grande ville d’Algérie, connaît un rythme d’urbanisation particulièrement soutenu ces dernières décennies. Il en résulte une consommation élevée de terres agricoles avoisinantes qui se poursuit à l’heure actuelle sous la pression massive de la production de logements et d’équipements dans la proche périphérie de la ville. Cette réalité est confirmée par les résultats obtenus à partir de traitements de télédétection appliqués sur une série d’images satellitaires.

À partir d’une enquête ethnographique dans les quartiers populaires de la banlieue de Dakar, cet article explore la construction progressive de toute une conceptualisation autour des inondations comme objet d’action publique. Il montre notamment comment les différentes formes de problématisation ont produit des référents pratiques et moraux qui permettent aux acteurs impliqués localement de se coordonner entre eux ainsi qu’avec l’État, ce qui amène à une certaine régulation des actions.

Periurban areas of growing cities in developing countries have been conceptualised as highly dynamic landscapes characterised by a mixture of socioeconomic structures, land uses and functions. While the body of conceptual literature on periurban areas has significantly increased over the past two decades, methods for operationalising these multi-dimensional concepts are rather limited. Yet, information about the location and areal extent of periurban areas is needed for integrated planning in the urban–rural interface.

The political dysfunction that had come to characterize an imploding Zimbabwean economy is beyond dispute. This paper explores how a government that had become weakened in the face of a formidable opposition in urban areas turned to use land as a reward for supporters and as a means of luring new members to join the ruling party. It argues that land patronage has been used as a means for legitimating fledgling state rule while undermining the tenure security of the poor.

 Population increase influence the dynamics in land market and agitate land access competition, which results into exclusion of some individuals. Inequality is evident in majority of Tanzanians women, youth, children and elderly. It is more prevalence in land markets where rich individuals are favorable to make choices regarding access to land resources. Owing to potential developments, peri-urban areas are becoming places where changes in land uses and activities take place.

This brief note identifies the consequences of land acquisitions in peri-urban spaces around the cities of Bamako and Ségou, Mali. This contributes to debates surrounding the rapid expansion of African cities faced with rapid rural-urban migration and new arrivals settling in precarious conditions. West Africa has a long history of urbanisation, in some cases accompanied by highly productive and intensified land use.
