This toolkit provides a practical guide on designing climate change mitigation activities. The toolkit aims to enhance synergies between climate change mitigation and biodiversity conservation policies. The first part of the toolkit gives an overview of possible climate change mitigation activities, especially in the land use, land use change and forestry sector. Possible benefits and negative impacts on biodiversity are detailed in relation to climate change mitigation. The second part introduces selected instruments that could be applied for the integration of biodiversity aspects into climate change mitigation activities. The advantages and disadvantages of these instruments for the indicated purpose are discussed and further literature for practical work with these instruments is presented. The third part of the toolkit supports the design of activities that are beneficial for biodiversity and contribute to the global 2010 biodiversity target. To facilitate the decision making process in the phase of the project design, the third part of the toolkit is based on decision-sheets for project types which are eligible according to the flexible mechanisms of the Kyoto Protocol.[adapted from author]
