The Global Call to Action on Indigenous Peoples and local community land rights aims to engage and mobilize communities, organizations, governments, and individuals worldwide in promoting and securing Indigenous Peoples and local communities’ land rights. Our GOAL is to secure all Indigenous and community land rights everywhere. Our TARGET is to double the global area of land legally recognized as owned or controlled by Indigenous Peoples and local communities by 2020. The call brings together hundreds of organisations globally to mobilise for secure land rights for Indigenous Peoples and local communities. It is co-convened by the International Land Coalition (ILC), Oxfam and the Rights and Resources Initiative (RRI).
On 9 March, 2016, we are presenting the report "COMMON GROUND: Securing land rights and safeguarding the earth", jointly published by Oxfam, ILC, and RRI, and screening short films that show the work of ILC members to secure community and indigenous land rights in India, Nicaragua and elsewhere. The LANDmark global map of indigenous and community lands and colleagues from IFAD and FAO will also share how they promote the land rights of Indigenous Peoples and local communities.
The Global Call to Action seeks to support Indigenous Peoples and local communities in their efforts to secure their own land and territorial rights, with a target of doubling the area of land recognised as owned or controlled by indigenous peoples and local communities by the year 2020. Securing these rights is at the heart of building a just and equitable world. From health to education, participation to peace, growth to cultural diversity, Indigenous Peoples and local communities’ land rights are fundamental to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals to which our nations’ leaders have committed.
If you consider securing land rights a priority, like we do, come along and find out more, including how you can get involved.
