The United Kingdom has historically played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith in the 19th century, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two world wars and the Irish Republic's withdrawal from the union. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council and a founding member of NATO and the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999. The latter was suspended until May 2007 due to wrangling over the peace process, but devolution was fully completed in March 2010.


The UK was an active member of the EU from 1973 to 2016, although it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union. However, frustrated by a remote bureaucracy in Brussels and massive migration into the country, UK citizens on 23 June 2016 narrowly voted to leave the EU. The so-called “Brexit” will take years to carry out but could be the signal for referenda in other EU countries where skepticism of EU membership benefits is strong.

Access to the Countryside (Maps in Draft Form) (England) Regulations 2001 (S.I. No. 3301 of 2001).

Part I of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 establishes a new regime for access to the countryside. Under Part I maps prepared by the Countryside Agency will show registered common land and open country. These Regulations make provision for the preparation of and consultation on maps in draft form under this Part. Regulation 3 provides for the preparation and scale of maps issued in draft form, including the form in which they are to be prepared.

Co-operative and Community Benefit Societies Act 2014 (2016 Chapter 14).

This Act, which extends to England and Wales and Scotland, consolidates legislation on co-operative and community benefit societies (formerly known as industrial and provident societies). The Act concerns registration etc. of societies and administration and operation of registered societies. A large part of the Act is dedicated to financial arrangement affecting registered societies.

This Act provides for rules relative to a tenement scheme and other matters relative to tenements as defined in section 26 of the Act such as boundaries and pertinents, resolution of disputes, support and shelter, repairs: costs and access, insurance, installation of service pipes etc., demolition and abandonment of tenement building, liability for certain costs, etc. The tenement scheme provides for the management and maintenance of the scheme property of a tenement.

Town and Country Planning (Marine Fish Farming) (Scotland) Amendment Regulations 2011 (S.S.I. No. 145 of 2011).

These Regulations amend the Town and Country Planning (Marine Fish Farming) (Scotland) Regulations 2007 so as to extend the cases of marine fish farm in respect of which an application for planning permission under section 31A of the Town and Country Planning (Scotland) Act 1997 must be made to the Scottish Ministers. The definition of “marine fish farm” is extended so as to include shellfish farms.

Common Agricultural Policy Single Payment and Support Schemes (Cross Compliance) (Amendment) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2009 (S.R. No. 316 of 2009).

These Regulations amend the Common Agricultural Policy Single Payment and Support Schemes (Cross Compliance) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2005 in definitions and with respect to the Soil Management Good Agricultural and Environmental Condition requirement in the Schedule. They also make consequential amendments to the principal Regulations where references are made to the Council Regulation (EC) No. 73/2009.
