Almakatei village, located on Alatf canal, was selected purposely to represent the community. Its agricultural land is located across three main districts in Menoufia Governorate – Al Bagour, Shebin Al Koum and Quesna. This was considered as one of the main advantages of selecting this site. El-Menira tertiary on Alatf canal was selected as the site for the study of the pipeline group. It is about 870 m long and it serves an area of about 40 ha. El-Hamra tertiary was selected for the study of the open canal group and serves an area of 30 ha.

One of the 'learning to innovate' sessions in the 2011 Third International Forum on Water and Food looked at experiences within the CPWF with multi-stakeholder Platforms (MSP) and Innovation Platforms (IP). This video has the group reports that discussed: 1) How do we scale out such platform processes? 2) What are the most significant lessons and messages in this area for 'research for development'? 3) What is new and innovative in the experiences shared? and 4) What are the research questions on platforms that could be addressed across CPWF Basins?

During the 2011 Third International Forum on Water and Food (in South Africa) Amare Haileselassie from ILRI reflected on ways that livestock can be integrated into rainwater management systems and strategies in Ethiopia. The overall aim is to improve 'livestock water productivity' through the adoption of various practices at farm and landscape levels.

En el presente número examinamos algunos de los retos planteados por los recursos hídricos a causa de la rapidez de las migraciones, y estudiamos una posible solución para intensificar el aprovechamiento de dichos recursos.

The continuing and rapid degradation of rural watersheds has been a major concern for governments and civil society in Asia and the Pacific region. A root cause is the segmented management of land and water resources. This has been exacerbated by the cumulative and linked effects of an increase in demand for food, fuel and water due to population growth, competition for scarce land resources from biofuel production and a shift in preference for protein-rich diets. The expected adverse impact of climate change in the coming decades will most likely worsen the situation.

Dans ce numéro, nous vous proposerons une analyse des grands défis auxquels sont confrontées les ressources en eau, en raison de l’accélération des migrations et nous évoquerons une solution possible pour une meilleure utilisation de ces ressources. Nous aurons également le plaisir d’accueillir une nouvelle secrétaire exécutive pour la Commission des ressources génétiques pour l’agriculture.

También informaremos sobre «Alimentos para las ciudades», una iniciativa integrativa orientada a coordinar las actividades de la FAO en zonas urbanas y periurbanas, y a compartir con otras organizaciones internacionales y de la sociedad civil las mejores prácticas realizadas en este ámbito.

The present document is an update and presentation of the natural, economic and social resources for sustainable development and management of the fishery and aquaculture sector in Armenia. It aims to call attention to, and provide evidence of, the fact that fisheries and aquaculture have substantial development potentials in Armenia. The country is rich in inland water resources, but the potentials of the fishery and aquaculture sector are far from being exploited.
