Cattle play an important role in rural livelihoods and the economies of developing countries, especially regarding food and nutrition security and producer welfare. Cattle support poverty alleviation by building resilience and strengthening the livelihoods of large numbers of rural people: over half a billion poor farmers depend on cattle globally.

The purpose of the Context Document is threefold: first, to characterize the environmental, social and economic context of each Agroecological Living Lab (ALL); second, to understand the data and information currently available in each ALL; and third to characterize how and the extent to which agroecological principles are already being employed in each ALL. The Context Document is not meant to be a quantitative baseline or an exhaustive report, but rather a broad overview of the situation in each ALL.

Land and water management practices have been widely implemented in rural Mali since the1980s to improve agricultural productivity and erosion control. Under conditions of recurring droughts, these practices are expected to increase farmers’ ability to cope with shocks. One of the most common practices applied in the central and southern parts of Mali is contour bunding (CB). In this study the impact of the CB technology is evaluated with a focus on biophysical and socio-economic benefits.

Agroecology is gaining ground as a movement, science, and set of practices designed to advance a food systems transformation which subverts the patterns of farmer exploitation currently entrenched in dominant agricultural models. In order for agroecology to achieve its espoused twin aims of social and ecological wellbeing, women and other historically marginalized stakeholders must be empowered and centered as the movement's protagonists.

Supporting young people to enter food value chains can help reduce high levels of youth unemployment across sub-Saharan Africa. The International Water Management Institute (IWMI) and WorldFish conducted a study to understand the drivers of, and hindrances to, youth entry into aquaculture value chains in Nigeria to support development of youth-inclusive policy for rural areas.

This position paper provides a conceptual framework for the gender-climate-security-nexus, a CGIAR portfolio review of work related to the nexus, and recommendations towards an agenda for One CGIAR in addressing the nexus.
