Environment-facing interventions impact the distribution, use of and access of natural resources and have important implications for all dimensions (material, relational, quality of life) of human well-being (HWB). Yet conventional impact metrics routinely surpass the non-material impacts which may be particularly salient in rural contexts where small-scale farmers depend directly on the land and biodiversity. Furthermore, little is known about the comparative performance of distinct interventions along a land-sharing, versus land sparing gradient, on local definitions of HWB.

The combination of inadequate understanding of the dynamics in rangeland ecosystems and local livelihood systems are to blame for the inappropriate policy actions, unabated rangeland degradation trends, impoverishment of communities living in the rangelands, and their increased vulnerability to various shocks including climate change. The root cause of these problems is mainly linked to lack of inadequate skilled human resources, trained in rangeland ecosystem management at the postgraduate level, to tackle the complex biodiversity interactions in the rangeland ecosystems.

Due to the continued expansion of pastures and illicit crops, the Andes-Amazon foothills in Colombia are one of most threatened biodiversity hotspots in the country. Halting and restoring the connectivity of the landscapes transformed over the last 40 years and now dominated by extensive cattle ranching practices, represents a challenge. Silvopastoral systems (SPSs) have been proposed as a strategy to help conserve the biodiversity by improving landscape connectivity. However, understanding the contributions of SPSs to biodiversity conservation still requires additional research.

Yet the growth of integrated strategies to adapt and guide human behavior in service of conservation outcomes has included limited engagement with questions of equity and power. Here we examine the use of behavioral approaches in conservation efforts, emphasizing potential misapplications that may result from omitting equity and power considerations.

CGIAR’s NEXUS Gains Initiative aims to realize gains across water, energy, food, and ecosystems (with a focus on forests and biodiversity) in selected transboundary river basins by leading global nexus thinking and providing tools, guidelines, training and facilitation for analysis, and research for development. Work Package 5 of NEXUS Gains specifically aims to develop the capacity of WEFE actors. A core component of the capacity strengthening program is a leadership development package tailored to WEFE nexus leaders, with emphasis on emerging women leaders.

Pathways for food and land use systems to contribute to global biodiversity targets

Biodiversity flourishes in areas where natural processes, such as plant and animal reproduction and dispersion, take place without human interruption. At present, we estimate that such land where natural processes predominate (LNPP) covers 56% of terrestrial land. Here, the evolution of global biodiversity is modelled, as indicated by LNPP, for two scenarios for food and land-use systems change to 2050: a “Current Trends” pathway, based on current policies and historical trends, and a “Sustainable” pathway, depicting ambitious assumptions aimed at sustainable development.

An inventory of crop wild relatives and wild-utilized plants in Canada

In the face of global pressures of change and biodiversity loss, crop wild relatives (CWR) and wild-utilized species (WUS) urgently require conservation attention. To advance conservation, we assembled a national inventory of CWR and WUS in Canada. To assess current ex situ conservation of these plant species, we gathered a virtual metacollection of accession data from botanical gardens and national genebanks.
