Organogenesis versus somatic embryogenesis pathway efficiencies in in vitro propagation of white and water yams

The primary goal of this study was to compare the multiplication rates of yam varieties propagated through organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis (SE). Callus was induced from axillary bud explants of three genotypes of Dioscorea rotundata (Asiedu, Ekiti2a, and Kpamyo) and two genotypes of Dioscorea alata (Swaswa and TDa2014) cultured in Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 9.1 µM 2,4-dichlorophenoxylacetic acid and 5.4 µM naphthaleneacetic acid. Plantlets were regenerated in MS containing 4.4 µM benzylaminopurine and 34 µM uniconazole-P through SE.

We need them to provide clean water and precious plant nutrients, to conserve biological diversity and to cope with climate change. And they form the basis for the livelihoods of millions of people. But despite such known facts, these valuable resources are in a dire state. A third of all soils world-wide are already degraded, and each year, further huge expanses of fertile land go lost.

In Cameroon, the pressure on wetlands, which cover nearly 70% of the national territory, appears to be increasing, whether for subsistence needs, firewood, grazing, logging or expansion of development projects. Currently, in terms of land use, forest has decreased by 619 km² and cultivated land has increased by 321 km². The surface area of degraded forests and land is estimated at around 12 million hectares, with a general trend towards an increase in the phenomenon due to both natural and anthropogenic factors.

Grasping the indirect and non-linear linkages between climate and conflict merits uncovering how inequalities entrenched in existing social structures may inform and mediate this intricate relationship. Despite growing understanding around the need to focus on the entire climate security inequality nexus, existing literature has so far been tipping towards either unpacking inequality and conflict or inequality and climate linkages. Furthermore, research for development work is yet to unpack in detail context-specific nuances of this complex nexus.

Land and water management practices have been widely implemented in rural Mali since the1980s to improve agricultural productivity and erosion control. Under conditions of recurring droughts, these practices are expected to increase farmers’ ability to cope with shocks. One of the most common practices applied in the central and southern parts of Mali is contour bunding (CB). In this study the impact of the CB technology is evaluated with a focus on biophysical and socio-economic benefits.

This paper developed an inventory of adaptation options implemented in the last two decades in Morocco. The agricultural development strategies and plans, set up since the early 2000s, targeting investments to modernize different economic sectors, were the Rural development strategy (RDS, 2008-2008), Green Morocco Plan (GMP, 2008-2020), and Generation Green (GG, 2022-2030).
