The United Kingdom has historically played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith in the 19th century, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two world wars and the Irish Republic's withdrawal from the union. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council and a founding member of NATO and the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999. The latter was suspended until May 2007 due to wrangling over the peace process, but devolution was fully completed in March 2010.
The UK was an active member of the EU from 1973 to 2016, although it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union. However, frustrated by a remote bureaucracy in Brussels and massive migration into the country, UK citizens on 23 June 2016 narrowly voted to leave the EU. The so-called “Brexit” will take years to carry out but could be the signal for referenda in other EU countries where skepticism of EU membership benefits is strong.

These Regulations amend for England the Access to the Countryside (Exclusions and Restrictions) (England) Regulations 2003, which make provisions relating to the exclusion or restriction of the public right of access to certain types of land under Part I of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000.These Regulations provide with respect to publication requirements in relation with an appeal made under section 30 of the Act against a decision of a relevant authority not to act in accordance with an application for a direction to exclude or restrict access for the purpose of fire prevention
Planning (Applications for Planning Permission, Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) (Amendment) (England) Regulations 2006 (S.I. No. 1063 of 2006).
These Regulations amend the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Regulations 1990 and the Town and Country Planning (Applications) Regulations 1988 in relation with an application for outline planning permission and “reserved matters”, applications made to local planning authorities for listed building consent or conservation area consent and design and access statements which are required to accompany applications for listed building consent.

Water Environment and Water Services (Scotland) Act 2003 (Consequential Provisions and Modifications) Order 2006 (S.I. No. 1054 (S. 10) of 2006).
This Order makes provisions and modifications in consequence of the Water Environment and Water Services (Scotland) Act 2003 and the Water Environment (Controlled Activities) (Scotland) Regulations 2005, made under the 2003 Act. The Regulations provide the mechanism by which activities that impact on the water environment are authorized and regulated in Scotland.This Order makes provision for the interaction of the 2005 Regulations with the authorization and regulation of the construction and operation of generating stations under the Electricity Act 1989.
Lands Tribunal (Amendment) Rules 2006 (S.I. No. 880 of 2006).
These Rules amend the Lands Tribunal Rules 1996 in relation to procedures of appeals from the leasehold valuation tribunal and residential property tribunals with the Lands Tribunal.
