The United Kingdom has historically played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith in the 19th century, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two world wars and the Irish Republic's withdrawal from the union. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council and a founding member of NATO and the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999. The latter was suspended until May 2007 due to wrangling over the peace process, but devolution was fully completed in March 2010.


The UK was an active member of the EU from 1973 to 2016, although it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union. However, frustrated by a remote bureaucracy in Brussels and massive migration into the country, UK citizens on 23 June 2016 narrowly voted to leave the EU. The so-called “Brexit” will take years to carry out but could be the signal for referenda in other EU countries where skepticism of EU membership benefits is strong.

Infrastructure Planning (Model Provisions) (England and Wales) Order 2009 (S.I. No. 2265 of 2009).

These Regulations prescribe model provisions for inclusion in the draft Order, which the Infrastructure Planning (Applications and Procedure) Regulations 2009 require to accompany an application for an order granting development consent. The Regulations also determine when and how these model provisions shall be used.

Environmental Impact Assessment (Uncultivated Land and Semi-natural Areas) (Wales) (Amendment) Regulations 2007 (W.S.I. No. 203 (W. 17) of 2007).

These Regulations amend the Environmental Impact Assessment (Uncultivated Land and Semi-natural Areas) (Wales) Regulations 2002 so as to implement Directive 2003/35/EC providing for public participation in certain environmental decision making. Amendments concern, among other things, disclosure of environmental information, assessment of projects and requirements relating to projects in Wales which may affect the environment in other EEA States and vice versa.

Common Agricultural Policy Single Payment and Support Schemes (Cross Compliance) (Wales) Regulations 2004 (W.S.I. No. 3280 (W.284) of 2004).

These Regulations make provision in Wales for the administration and enforcement of compliance of farmers with a range of laws and standards regarding "good agricultural and environmental condition". The National Assembly for Wales, as the competent national authority, shall be responsible for providing farmers with a list of the statutory management requirements and standards of good agricultural and environmental condition on their land.

Land Registration (Proper Office) (Amendment) Order 2011 (S.I. No. 1411 of 2011).

This Order amends the Land Registration (Proper Office) Order 2010 in the definition of “conveyancer” in article 2(2) order to include those who are or who employ authorized persons, authorized or licensed under the provisions of the Legal Services Act 2007 to carry on certain reserved instrument activities relating to land registration. The definition also includes public officers carrying on those activities.
