The United Kingdom has historically played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith in the 19th century, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface. The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two world wars and the Irish Republic's withdrawal from the union. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council and a founding member of NATO and the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999. The latter was suspended until May 2007 due to wrangling over the peace process, but devolution was fully completed in March 2010.


The UK was an active member of the EU from 1973 to 2016, although it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union. However, frustrated by a remote bureaucracy in Brussels and massive migration into the country, UK citizens on 23 June 2016 narrowly voted to leave the EU. The so-called “Brexit” will take years to carry out but could be the signal for referenda in other EU countries where skepticism of EU membership benefits is strong.

These Regulations make provision for the new development management processes for determining planning applications. In doing so, they put in place the regulatory framework required to implement the development management provisions in Part 3 of the Planning Act (Northern Ireland) 2011.

These Regulations provide for the collection, transport and treatment of food waste, and for related matters. They are made for purposes of Articles 11(1) (re-use and recycling) and 22 (bio-waste), and in accordance with Articles 4 (waste hierarchy) and 13 (protection of human health and the environment) of Directive 2008/98/EC on waste. They also amend the Waste and Contaminated Land (Northern Ireland) Order 1997 and other Regulations to provide with respect to the separate collection of food waste.

Planning (Statement of Community Involvement) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 2015 (S.I. No. 63 of 2015).

These Regulations prescribe the form and content of a statement of community involvement (SCI) as provided for by section 4 of the Planning Act (Northern Ireland) 2011. The SCI shall be prepared by district councils and shall be as prescribed by these Regulations and approved by the Department of the Environment. The SCI shall set out principles of how the council will involve the community in exercising its local development plan functions under Part 2 of the 2011 Act.

Planning (General Permitted Development) Order (Northern Ireland) 2015 (S.I. No. 70 of 2015).

This Order grants, subject to certain conditions, planning permission for certain classes of development under Part 3 of the Planning Act (Northern Ireland) 2011. Conditions are prescribed in part by regulations 55 and 56 of the Conservation (Natural Habitats, etc) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1995 and for, among others, so-called EIA development, certain waterworks and development to be carried out on land which is within or affects: (i) a conservation area; (ii) a National Park; (iii) a nature reserve; (iv) an area of outstanding natural beauty.
