This study attempts to identify the impacts of land tenure institutions on the efficiency of farm management based on a case study of paddy rice and upland cinnamon production in the Kerinci Valley in West Sumatra, where most of Indonesia’s cinnamon is produced. The attractiveness of cinnamon as a commercial crop has implications for forest preservation. Kerinci Valley is an enclave surrounded by the Kerinci Seblat National Park, one of the largest parks in Sumatra.

En este número, último del volumen 31, presentamos experiencias de mujeres agricultoras que han optado por practicar la agroecología como alternativa para lograr la sostenibilidad de la producción de alimentos para su familia y comunidad, y la mejora de sus agroecosistemas. Pero en lo social y económico la práctica de la agroecología que presentan estas experiencias ha contribuido a la autonomía económica de las mujeres organizadas y, por ello, a la reivindicación y reconocimiento de sus derechos como ciudadanas plenas.

Los documentos presentados se refieren a un estudio desarrollado en el marco de una iniciativa interagencial — Organización de las Naciones Unidas para las Mujeres (ONU-Mujeres), la Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe (CEPAL), la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricoltura (FAO) — liderada por ONU-Mujeres acerca del Enfoque Territorial para el Empoderamiento de las Mujeres Rurales en América Latina y el Caribe, la misma que fue coordinada por el Centro Latinoamericano para el Desarrollo Rural (RIMISP).

El Programa Mujer y Tierra de la Coalición Internacional por el Acceso a la Tierra —ILC— América Latina y El Caribe fue desarrollado durante 15 meses en los años 2013 y 2014.

ABSTRACTED FROM EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: In the last decade it has become widely accepted that insecurity of land tenure has a unique impact on women, particularly in the global South where, more often than not, women are the primary caregivers in a household. In Cambodia, where land conflict continues to be one of the most prevalent human rights issues in the country, this assertion deserves particular consideration.

Vietnam’s 1993 Land Law created a land market by granting households land-use rights which could be exchanged, leased, inherited, sold or mortgaged. This study uses quantitative and qualitative methods to analyze whether increased land titling led to discernible improvements in the economic security of households, and whether land titles in women’s names had markedly different effects as compared to titles held by men.

ABSTRACTED FROM THE INTRODUCTION: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) plays a leading role in the achievement of Millennium Development Goal (MDG) 1 – the eradication of extreme poverty and hunger. The majority of the world’s poor live in rural areas and have labour and land as their only or main productive assets. Therefore, promoting secure access to and control and use of land as well as secure and productive employment and decent work for women and men in rural areas is vital to achieving MDG1.

ABSTRACTED FROM THE GENERAL COMMENTS SECTION: The RGC in its combined 2010 Fourth and Fifth National Report (the ―RGC Report‖) on the Implementation of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women in Cambodia, makes specific reference to provisions in the Constitution and the Penal Code 1, claiming that the existence of these provisions in and of themselves, alongside plans to pass additional laws, guarantees full equality of women with men in the protection and enjoyment of human rights, as well as protection from all forms of discrimination.
