This is one of three country studies on Innovation Pathways in Agri-food Systems, managed by the Commission for Sustainable Agriculture Intensification (CoSAI). The three studies use a common analytical framework to generate lessons on factors leading to successful innovation pathways, to guide future investment.

Zambia’s youth are key development catalysts that have the potential to foster economic prosperity in their communities, when provided with adequate support. As a means to better support Zambia’s youth population, many recent interventions have focused on expanding youth’s access to quality education. However, despite obtaining a higher education, numerous recent university graduates remain unable to qualify for gainful employment opportunities due to their lack of work experience and/or underdevelopment of professional skills.

Adaptation to climate change is happening on several fronts. The study was commissioned to capture gender dynamics in climate information services, climate smart agriculture technologies, and climate-smart one–health interventions for promoting social inclusion and informing policy in Ghana’s food systems. The study regions were selected based on previous evidence of impacts of climate change generated by Climate Change and Food Security (CCAFS) project.

This note proposes a roadmap to advise public and private investors, banks, corporates, and NGOs, on how to mainstream gender smart investing to scale climate-smart agriculture (CSA).

Agriculture is the mainstay of Uganda’s economy, contributing about 25% of the GDP, a third of the export earnings and almost all the country’s food requirements. Yet, the sector still faces various challenges that affect production and the income derived from it. Systemic issues impact smallholder farmers' livelihoods across markets, land, skills, and capital, with cross-cutting social exclusion issues.

Structural change is integral to evolving economies (Goddard et al., 1993). Although increased agricultural productivity has allowed the release of resources needed by other sectors of the economy, structural change in agriculture usually has a negative connotation in public debate (Balmann and Valentinov, 2016). There are mainly two types of public concern about structural change in agriculture, with the former expressed as “dying peasants” and the latter as “factory farming” (Balmann and Valentinov, 2016).

As Rwanda is expected to return to its rapid growth trajectory following the COVID-19 pandemic, agriculture will continue to play a central role in the structural transformation of the entire economy. To this end, the Government of Rwanda continues to invest in the agricultural sector by building on Strategic Plans for the Transformation of Agriculture (PSTAs) that began in the early 2000s. The challenging question is how to prioritize public expenditures across a broad portfolio of policies and programs. Ambitious plans, whether in the short or long term, require difficult decisions.

While numerous studies have documented the benefits of conservation agriculture (CA) in South Asia, most focus on favorable environments where farmers have reliable access to energy supporting irrigation and inputs. The performance of CA in South Asia’s under-developed coastal environments is comparatively understudied.

Natural calamities such as drought, famine, and climate change have collided to create a humanitarian crisis. For the Horn of Africa (HoA), famine is among the factors that have caused the worst historical damages to the individual countries. Man-made calamities such as decentralized agricultural, pastoral activities and forest clearing are also root causes for the damage. Institutional arrangements (IAs) on land tenure systems and agricultural land conversion (ALC) as a part of this problem will be analyzed in this paper.

This paper mapped the institutions involved in planning, funding, implementing, maintaining and monitoring, and evaluating of the adaptation interventions in Morocco. It considered the following interventions implemented through the Green Morocco Plan for mapping institutions. 1). Adoption of Water Saving Program in irrigation 2). Adoption of resilient cropping patterns, and 3). Improvement of the investment climate in agriculture.

This is a summary of the deliberations, emerging issues and action points from the high-level regional conference on land and conflict in the East and Horn of Africa. The objective of the Conference was to facilitate the development of a regional agenda and national policy priorities in land conflict and governance in the region. The Conference facilitated discussion and understanding of the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Number 16 on peaceful and inclusive societies, access to justice and the building of effective institutions.
