Reviews the characteristics of African pastoralism. Describes the major technical land institutional interventions along with the reasons why they have proved so difficult.

These Measures are formulated in accordance with the Grassland Law of the People’s Republic of China. The Text consists of 31 Articles divided into 5 Chapters: General Provisions (I); Grassland Ownership and Use Right of Grasslands(II); (III); Grassland Protection and Utilization (III); Reward and Punishment (IV); Supplementary Provisions (V).

This paper analyses briefly the reasons why enclosures of the rangelands is taking place, the short and long term impact on different groups, and the technical and environmental issues. Examples are given from Kenya and Somalia.

Describes the characteristics of dairy production and processing in South Darfur and provides an analysis of the way in which pastoral families vary their diets according to seasonal food shortages and shifting terms of trade between milk and food grains.

Reviews the appropriateness of three major assumptions underlying pastoral development in East Africa, viz, economic irrationality of pastoralists, the unchanged nature of pastoral production systems, and the applicability of western models to pastoral development.
