Peacebuilding and Natural Resource Governance After Armed Conflict

Journal Articles & Books
Julio, 2019
Liberia
Sierra Leone

This book argues that a set of persuasive narratives about the links between natural resource, armed conflict and peacebuilding have strongly influenced the natural resource interventions pursued by international peacebuilders. The author shows how international peacebuilders active in Liberia and Sierra Leone pursued a collective strategy to transform “conflict resources” into “peace resources” vis-à-vis a policy agenda that promoted “securitization” and “marketization” of natural resources.

Operationalizing Vulnerability: Land System Dynamics in a Transfrontier Conservation Area

Peer-reviewed publication
Julio, 2019
África austral

Understanding how individuals, communities, and populations vary in their vulnerability requires defining and identifying vulnerability with respect to a condition, and then developing robust methods to reliably measure vulnerability. In this study, we illustrate how a conceptual model translated via simulation can guide the real-world implementation of data collection and measurement of a model system. We present a generalizable statistical framework that specifies linkages among interacting social and biophysical components in complex landscapes to examine vulnerability.

For decades food insecurity has been a challenge in Cameroon’s Far North region;mainly due to extreme weather and weak land legislation. Now the problem is escalating. The current humanitarian crisis caused by the Boko Haram insurgency has resulted in over 87,000 refugees and 340,000 internally displaced people in the region. Humanitarian agencies are responding with food aid but little attention is given to underlying challenges;notably access to land. The reform of land legislation is an opportunity to strengthen land rights for local communities and marginalised groups.

Growing farmer-herder conflicts in Tanzania: the licenced exclusions of pastoral communities interests over access to resources

Journal Articles & Books
Mayo, 2019
Tanzania

The growing number of farmer-herder resource conflicts in Tanzania is often presented in official narratives as a product of climate change resulting from increased environmental pressures. Nonetheless, based on a qualitative research, this paper asserts that farmer- herder conflicts in Rufiji and Kisarawe districts should be understood in terms of the marginalization of pastoral community interests over access to land. This has created what Hall, Hirsch and Li [2013. Power of Exclusions: Lland Dilemmas in Southeast Asia.
