Roundtable Convening on Women and Youth SMEs in Agribusiness

Diciembre, 2022
Global

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture collaborated with The Rallying Cry to understand the challenges faced by women- and youth-led agribusinesses in Zambia. As such, two workshops were previously held in September and December 2022 with the target group to obtain an understanding of their challenges and identify possible solutions. These challenges were categorised into themes: (a) Environmental constraints; (b) Network; (c) Climate change response; (d) Capacity Building; and (e) Social and cultural norms.

Climate Action Plan for the East and Horn of Africa and Great Lakes Region 2023-2028

Diciembre, 2022
Global

As a central component of the 2022-2026 UNHCR Strategic Directions, UNHCR has globally identified eight focus areas that require renewed attention and accelerated effort. One of these is climate action. In 2021, UNHCR published its Strategic Framework for Climate Action and, in 2022, its Operational Strategy for Climate Resilience and Environmental Sustainability
(2022-2025).

Bias correction and spatial disaggregation of satellite-based data for the detection of rainfall seasonality indices

Diciembre, 2022
Global

Like many other African countries, Ghana’s rain gauge networks are rapidly deteriorating, making it challenging to obtain real-time rainfall estimates. In recent years, real-time satellite precipitation products (SPPs) development and accessibility have advanced significantly. SPPs may compliment or substitute gauge data, enabling better real-time forecasting of streamflows among other things. SPPs, on the other hand, contain considerable biases that must be addressed before the rainfall predictions can be applied to any hydrologic purpose, including seasonal or real-time forecasts.

A place in the sun: farmers' co-benefits from solar irrigation in Bangladesh

Diciembre, 2022
Global

Solar irrigation pumps (SIPs) are gradually replacing diesel pumps in relatively water-intensive agricultural production systems and geographies to reduce carbon emissions from food systems. However, beyond its climate change mitigation potential and fulfillment of Nationally Determined Contributions commitments, the adoption of solar irrigation also has direct co-benefits for farmers. Taking the case of Bangladesh and anchored on primary data collected among solar and diesel pump users, this article analyses the role access to solar irrigation has on household and farm-level outcomes.

Development of an Anticipatory Action Plan for drought hazard in Sri Lanka

Diciembre, 2022
Sri Lanka

This report underscores the escalating threat of climate disasters to global populations, emphasizing the heightened vulnerability of Sri Lanka, an island nation susceptible to diverse climate-related hazards. With floods, landslides, droughts, cyclones, and other extreme events on the rise due to climate change, the inevitability of future disasters looms large. Urgent proactive measures are imperative to address this pressing issue, as the population is ill-prepared to handle severe consequences without comprehensive and anticipatory strategies.

The IGAD Climate Adaptation Strategy (2023-2030)

Diciembre, 2022
Global

The IGAD region is currently facing enormous adaptation challenges and stands to bear the brunt of the most severe near-term climate change impacts. In response to these challenges, the IGAD Climate Adaptation Strategy (2023-2030) was developed to provide a framework for coordinated action to address climate risks and enhance the resilience and adaptive capacities of IGAD Member States.

Soybean Value Chain: A Climate-Smart Agriculture Approach - An Extension Workers Manual

Diciembre, 2022
Uganda

The manual is designed to assist the reader with information about soybean value chain and its management in times of climate change. It is comprised of six chapters of coordinated content as summarized below. First chapter of this manual is focused on the soybean and its development and also describes the status of soybean in Uganda and its significance.

Guideline for measuring agronomic gain key performance indicators in on-farm trials

Diciembre, 2022
Global

Agronomic gain key performance indicators (KPIs) are designed to monitor, evaluate and measure the impact of changes in agronomic practices in the CGIAR Excellence in Agronomy initiative (EiA). The current KPIs cover land productivity and its stability, resource use efficiency and soil health (Table 1; Saito et al., 2021). It is expected that the KPIs will be used across geographies, farming systems, and research and development (R&D) stages to deliver a greater depth of understanding of agronomic gain than has ever been achieved before.

Training of Trainers Workshop on Enhancing Forecasting Capacities and Crop Capability Prediction Models and Tools - 2023

Diciembre, 2022
Global

The detrimental impact of hydro-meteorological risks on agriculture frequently leads to food insecurity, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Hence, the agriculture communities require climate-informed decision support tools that guide adaptation measures against climate change in the agriculture sector. The climate-informed crop capability prediction tool is one of these tools to benefit user community in making tactical and strategic decisions on inputs needed for agriculture and food security sectors as early as the crop-growing season.

Towards a Replicable Innovative Tool for Adaptive Climate Monitoring and Weather Forecasting Using Traditional Indigenous and Local Indicators to Strengthen AgroWeather Resilience at Scale

Diciembre, 2022
Global

This paper presents lessons of a replicable innovative decision support tool to systematize traditional indigenous
knowledge base for local climate monitoring and weather forecasting. The methodological tool, herein called the
traditional indigenous and local knowledge tool (TILKIT), was conceptualized under two training-of-trainers
initiatives on Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) in East Africa from March 2016 to December 2021. The aim was to

Streamlining Climate Education to Tackle Climate Crisis: Call For Action to Empower Ethiopia’s Next Generation with Climate Knowledge and Build Resilience

Diciembre, 2022
Global

Climate change has become a reality that requires mitigation and adaptation of climate change by devising appropriate measures and participatory approaches. Ethiopia is committed to setting policy frameworks and implementation strategies to mitigate and adapt to climate change and produce a climate change-resilient society. It is well understood that education and climate change have a reciprocal relationship, and education has a strong power for climate change adaptation and mitigation endeavours.

Heat-tolerant maize for rainfed hot, dry environments in the lowland tropics: from breeding to improved seed delivery

Diciembre, 2022
Global

Climate change-induced heat stress combines two challenges: high day- and nighttime temperatures, and physiological water deficit due to demand-side drought caused by increase in vapor-pressure deficit. It is one of the major factors in low productivity of maize in rainfed stress-prone environments in South Asia, affecting a large population of smallholder farmers who depend on maize for their sustenance and livelihoods.
